I’ve tested both IPVanish and PrivadoVPN extensively across my own devices and on my YouTube channels. They’re two of the most interesting VPNs to compare honestly — not because they’re direct competitors in the traditional sense, but because they occupy completely different corners of the value proposition map. IPVanish gives you two independent no-logs audits, unlimited devices, top-3 speeds, and a strong Firestick reputation. PrivadoVPN gives you Swiss jurisdiction, physical server ownership, and the cheapest credible premium VPN price on the market at $1.11/mo — plus the best free plan available anywhere.

Neither is the right pick for everyone. This article tells you which one is right for you, based on your actual priorities.

Quick orientation: If you’re here to decide between these two specifically, read the head-to-head comparison section. If you want to understand each VPN in depth before deciding, work through the full review below. My overall #1 VPN recommendation remains Surfshark — but IPVanish is my top pick in this comparison for most users, with PrivadoVPN as the budget and free-plan winner.

Best for Most Users

🇨🇭 QUICK VERDICT — PRIVADOVPN
Best Budget & Free VPN
PrivadoVPN logo

PrivadoVPN — Our verdict

The cheapest credible premium VPN at $1.11/mo and the best free VPN on the market. Swiss jurisdiction and physical server ownership make it a serious contender — the main gap is the absence of a published independent no-logs audit.

  • Cheapest credible premium VPN — $1.11/mo on 2-year plan
  • Best free VPN — 10GB/month, no credit card, no time limit
  • Swiss jurisdiction — outside 5/9/14 Eyes alliances
  • Owns its physical server infrastructure
  • Unlimited devices on Premium
  • No published independent no-logs audit yet

Pricing: Which Is Cheaper?

PrivadoVPN wins on price — there’s no debate here. At $1.11/mo on the 2-year plan, it’s the cheapest credible premium VPN available anywhere. IPVanish comes in at $2.19/mo on the same plan length — nearly double. Both offer unlimited devices on their paid plans, so the pricing gap isn’t offset by device limits.

Plan IPVanish PrivadoVPN
Monthly ~$10.99/mo $10.99/mo
1-year plan ~$3.99/mo $1.33/mo ($15.96 total)
2-year plan (recommended) $2.19/mo ($52.56 total) $1.11/mo ($29.97 total + 3 months free)
Free plan ❌ Not available ✅ 10GB/month — no credit card

The other major pricing differentiator: PrivadoVPN has a genuinely usable free tier. If you want to test a VPN before paying anything, PrivadoVPN is the only option on this list that lets you do that — no credit card required, 10GB/month indefinitely, same physical servers as paid users.

IPVanish doesn’t offer a free plan, but it does offer a 7-day free trial on mobile (iOS and Android via the App Store / Google Play).

Watch out for renewal pricing with IPVanish: The $2.19/mo promotional rate applies to the first billing cycle. IPVanish’s renewal rate is $89.99/year — roughly $7.50/mo. Mark your renewal date and re-subscribe on a new promotional rate before auto-renewal kicks in. My IPVanish coupon page tracks the current best rate.

Privacy & Security: The Critical Difference

This is where IPVanish and PrivadoVPN diverge most sharply — and where your decision should probably be made.

Jurisdiction

PrivadoVPN is incorporated in Switzerland. IPVanish is headquartered in Orlando, Florida, USA. This is not a minor difference.

Switzerland sits outside the 5, 9, and 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. Swiss law (Federal Data Protection Act) is among the most protective in the world for VPN providers. There are no mandatory data retention requirements, and Swiss courts have consistently upheld strong data privacy protections. This is the same jurisdictional advantage as Proton VPN — and PrivadoVPN offers it at roughly one-third the price of Proton’s paid plan.

The USA, by contrast, is a founding member of the 5 Eyes alliance. US authorities can compel IPVanish to comply with subpoenas, warrants, and National Security Letters. Any data IPVanish holds — email address, payment details, account status — is accessible through legal process. This isn’t theoretical: it happened.

The 2016 IPVanish Incident — What You Need to Know

Important history: In 2016, under the ownership of Highwinds Network Group, the Department of Homeland Security issued a summons to IPVanish related to a child exploitation investigation. IPVanish complied and provided user data — including email address, account status, real IP address, and connection timestamps — that was part of the investigation. At the time, IPVanish was publicly claiming a strict no-logs policy. The fact that logs existed to provide directly contradicted that claim.

What’s changed since: Three ownership changes later, IPVanish is now owned by Ziff Davis. The company has completed two independent audits (Leviathan Security Group in 2022, Schellman Compliance in February 2025) and publishes quarterly transparency reports. The 2025 Schellman audit specifically tested for the types of data that would be useful in a legal request — and found nothing.

My honest take: The IPVanish operating today is functionally a different company from the one that made the 2016 disclosure. The audits are real, and the transparency reports consistently show zero disclosures. But if you’re a journalist, activist, or anyone whose safety depends on VPN privacy, the combination of US jurisdiction and this documented history is reason enough to choose Proton VPN or PrivadoVPN instead.

No-Logs Audits

IPVanish has two independent audits. PrivadoVPN has none published yet. This is one of IPVanish’s strongest advantages over PrivadoVPN — and it matters.

Audit IPVanish PrivadoVPN
First audit ✅ Leviathan Security Group (2022) ❌ Not published
Second audit ✅ Schellman Compliance (Feb 2025) ❌ Not published
Transparency reports ✅ Quarterly (zero disclosures) ❌ Not published
RAM-only servers ✅ Rollout underway ✅ Transition in progress

PrivadoVPN’s Swiss jurisdiction is a meaningful substitute — but it’s not equivalent to third-party verification. If audited no-logs assurance is your primary requirement, IPVanish is the stronger pick between these two. If Swiss jurisdiction matters more to you than audit credentials, PrivadoVPN wins.

Encryption & Protocols

Both VPNs use AES-256 encryption and support WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. Both pass DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak tests. Both offer system-wide kill switches. There is no meaningful difference in encryption quality between these two VPNs.

One notable difference: PrivadoVPN’s kill switch is a system-wide kill switch that cuts all internet access when the VPN drops. IPVanish’s kill switch works correctly across most protocols, but I found that closing the iOS app while on IKEv2 didn’t immediately terminate the VPN connection — it stayed active in the background. Use the in-app disconnect button when on IKEv2.

Physical Server Ownership

Both IPVanish and PrivadoVPN own most of their server infrastructure physically rather than leasing from third parties. This is unusual — most budget VPNs rely entirely on leased virtual servers. Direct ownership means no third-party hosting company has access to the hardware, and servers can be configured specifically for privacy rather than defaulting to a host’s standard settings. It’s a genuine differentiator that both of these VPNs share.

Speed Comparison

IPVanish is faster. It ranks third in my speed testing across all VPNs I’ve reviewed, behind only Surfshark and NordVPN. PrivadoVPN delivers solid speeds — fast enough for everything most users do — but the gap is real, especially on distant servers.

Server Location IPVanish Download Retention PrivadoVPN Download Retention
Local / Nearby ~92% ~94–95%
United States 91% (459 Mbps) 95% (192 Mbps)*
United Kingdom 90% (451 Mbps) 90% (181 Mbps)*
Europe (avg.) ~91% ~89–90%
Australia 93% (467 Mbps) 74% (148 Mbps)*
Japan 92% (461 Mbps) 72% (144 Mbps)*

*PrivadoVPN speeds tested from a 201 Mbps baseline. IPVanish speeds tested from a 500 Mbps baseline. Percentage retention is the more meaningful comparison between different test environments.

The practical takeaway: on nearby servers, the speed difference is small and neither will feel slow in daily use. On distant servers (Japan, Australia), IPVanish’s retention advantage becomes noticeable — particularly for upload-heavy tasks like video calls or large file transfers. For standard 4K streaming and browsing, PrivadoVPN’s speeds are more than adequate even on distant connections.

Speed context: For reference, Surfshark leads my speed testing at ~95% retention, followed by NordVPN at ~89%. IPVanish at ~92% is genuinely competitive. PrivadoVPN at ~85% overall is solid for a budget VPN.

Streaming Comparison

Netflix

Both VPNs handle Netflix well. IPVanish reliably unblocks US, UK, Japan, and India libraries. PrivadoVPN extends that to Australia, Canada, Brazil, and more. For Netflix specifically, PrivadoVPN’s coverage is broader — and it works on the free plan too (subject to the 10GB monthly data cap).

Amazon Prime Video

IPVanish wins here. It consistently unblocks Prime Video on US and regional servers. PrivadoVPN is inconsistent — Prime Video successfully detects it on many servers, and reliable access requires trying multiple servers in the same region. If Prime Video is a priority, IPVanish is the better pick between these two.

Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu

Both VPNs work reliably with Disney+ and HBO Max. Hulu works on IPVanish and on PrivadoVPN Premium (with data cap constraints on the free plan).

BBC iPlayer

Neither VPN is excellent here. IPVanish’s UK servers work but with occasional buffering and quality inconsistencies. PrivadoVPN works but may require a server switch. For dedicated iPlayer streaming, CyberGhost or Surfshark are more consistent options.

Firestick & Fire TV

IPVanish is the clear winner for Fire TV users. It has a native app in the Amazon Appstore, a well-designed remote-navigation interface, and even a dedicated Kill Switch app for Fire TV — a workaround for Fire TV’s lack of native split tunneling support. Its reputation in the Firestick and Kodi communities is genuinely earned. PrivadoVPN offers a dedicated Fire TV app as well, but IPVanish’s depth of Fire TV optimization is in a different league.

Platform IPVanish PrivadoVPN
Netflix US ✅ Reliable ✅ Reliable
Netflix UK / AU / CA ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Amazon Prime Video ✅ Consistent ⚠️ Inconsistent
Disney+ ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
HBO Max ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
BBC iPlayer ⚠️ Partial ⚠️ Partial
Hulu ✅ Yes ✅ Yes (Premium)
YouTube TV ✅ Yes ❌ No
Fire TV / Firestick ✅ Best-in-class ✅ App available
Apple TV ✅ Native app ✅ tvOS app

Torrenting Comparison

Both VPNs allow P2P traffic on all servers. Both include a SOCKS5 proxy (PrivadoVPN on Premium, IPVanish on all plans). Both have kill switches to protect your IP if the VPN drops during a download. Neither supports port forwarding — the main limitation for private tracker users who need to maintain seeding ratios.

For casual torrenting, both are fine. For power torrenters needing port forwarding, look at PIA or Proton VPN instead.

One notable PrivadoVPN advantage: P2P is available on the free plan. If you want to torrent without paying anything, PrivadoVPN Free is your only real option — most other free VPNs either block P2P entirely or throttle it severely.

Apps & Usability

Both VPNs offer apps across Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Fire TV, and Android TV. Both are beginner-friendly. The interface philosophy differs: IPVanish has more configuration options (Double Hop, Secure Browser, Link Checker, Block LAN Traffic, map view server selection), while PrivadoVPN prioritizes simplicity with a single-tap connect experience.

Linux users: Neither offers a GUI Linux app. Both require manual WireGuard or OpenVPN configuration. If Linux GUI support matters, Proton VPN or Mullvad are better picks.

One PrivadoVPN quirk worth knowing: the desktop app window can’t be resized and stays docked near the taskbar. It’s a minor UX annoyance that doesn’t affect functionality.

Split Tunneling

Both VPNs offer split tunneling (PrivadoVPN calls it SmartRoute). Notably, PrivadoVPN includes split tunneling on iOS — which most VPNs don’t offer on that platform. In my testing, both implementations work as advertised: excluded apps route outside the VPN while everything else stays tunneled.

Customer Support

IPVanish has a significant support advantage. It offers 24/7 live chat, email support, and a phone line (Monday–Friday) — phone support being genuinely rare in the VPN industry. Response times in live chat are typically under 3 minutes in my testing.

PrivadoVPN is email-only. No live chat, no phone support. That said, email response times are faster than you’d expect — I received clear, helpful replies within 20 minutes in my testing. If you rarely need support and respond well to written communication, email-only is workable. If you want instant help or prefer voice troubleshooting, IPVanish wins outright.

Extra Features

IPVanish Extras

IPVanish’s Advanced plan ($3.29/mo on 2-year) adds 1TB of Livedrive cloud backup and file sync — worth considering if you’d pay for cloud storage separately. The Essential plan includes Threat Protection (DNS-level ad and tracker blocking), Secure Browser (cloud-isolated browsing session), Link Checker (URL scanning), Double Hop (dual-server routing for extra privacy), and On Demand connections.

PrivadoVPN Extras

PrivadoVPN Premium includes Control Tower — a browser-level security suite covering ad blocking, threat protection, parental controls, and third-party tracker blocking. It also includes Email Relay, which generates disposable email aliases that forward to your real inbox — similar to Surfshark’s Alternative ID feature. Privado Sentry (antivirus for Windows) is available as an add-on for under $2/month.

Who Should Choose IPVanish?

Choose IPVanish if you…

  • Primarily use Firestick, Fire TV, or Kodi — IPVanish’s app quality and reputation here is unmatched
  • Want two independently verified no-logs audits for peace of mind
  • Need Amazon Prime Video to work reliably
  • Value phone support alongside 24/7 live chat
  • Want to avoid Kape Technologies-owned VPNs (ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, PIA)
  • Have a household with many devices and want the fastest speeds
  • Stream YouTube TV

Don’t choose IPVanish if you…

  • Are a journalist, activist, or privacy-critical user — US jurisdiction and the 2016 history are real concerns
  • Need port forwarding for private tracker torrenting
  • Want to pay with cryptocurrency anonymously
  • Need a dedicated IP address
  • Are on a tight budget and $2.19/mo is more than you want to spend

Who Should Choose PrivadoVPN?

Choose PrivadoVPN if you…

  • Want the absolute lowest price for a credible VPN — $1.11/mo is genuinely hard to beat
  • Want to try a VPN free before committing — PrivadoVPN Free is the best free tier available
  • Prioritize Swiss jurisdiction over audit credentials
  • Want to pay with cryptocurrency for near-anonymous signup
  • Primarily stream Netflix across multiple regional libraries
  • Want to torrent on a free plan
  • Have many devices and want unlimited connections at the cheapest price

Don’t choose PrivadoVPN if you…

  • Require a published independent no-logs audit — Proton VPN ($2.99/mo) gives you Swiss + audited
  • Rely on Amazon Prime Video — too inconsistent
  • Want 24/7 live chat support
  • Need port forwarding for private tracker seeding
  • Use Fire TV as your primary streaming device — IPVanish is better here
  • Regularly stream YouTube TV

How They Compare to Other Top VPNs

Neither IPVanish nor PrivadoVPN is my overall #1 recommendation — that remains Surfshark at $1.99/mo, which combines the fastest speeds in my testing, two Deloitte audits, unlimited devices, and one of the best streaming track records available. But both earn their place in the ranking for specific reasons.

VPN Price (2-year) Speed Jurisdiction Audits Best for
Surfshark $1.99/mo ~95% (fastest) Netherlands 2 (Deloitte) Best overall value
IPVanish $2.19/mo ~92% (top 3) USA (5 Eyes) 2 (Leviathan + Schellman) Firestick, devices, streaming
Proton VPN $2.99/mo ~92% Switzerland Multiple Privacy-critical users
PrivadoVPN $1.11/mo ~85% Switzerland None published Budget users, free plan
NordVPN $3.59/mo ~89% Panama 6 (Deloitte + PwC) Audit credentials, restrictive countries
ExpressVPN $2.79/mo ~91% BVI Multiple Ease of use (Kape-owned)*

*ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and PIA are all owned by Kape Technologies. Worth knowing if you’re choosing based on ownership structure.

My Verdict: IPVanish vs PrivadoVPN

For most users comparing these two, IPVanish is the stronger pick. Two independent audits, faster speeds, better streaming across more platforms (especially Prime Video), the best Firestick experience available, 24/7 live chat, and phone support — these are real advantages that PrivadoVPN doesn’t match.

But PrivadoVPN is the right choice for a specific and real group of users: anyone who wants the cheapest credible VPN, anyone who wants to try a VPN without paying anything, and anyone who prioritizes Swiss jurisdiction over audit credentials. The $1.08/mo gap between these two VPNs adds up to roughly $26 over a 2-year term — meaningful money if the budget matters.

If you’re uncertain which applies to you, start with PrivadoVPN Free. No credit card, 10GB/month, same servers as paid users. If it works for your use case, the $1.11/mo upgrade is an easy call. If you need faster speeds, better Prime Video support, or Fire TV optimization, upgrade to IPVanish.

My overall #1 recommendation remains Surfshark — fastest speeds in my testing, two Deloitte audits, unlimited devices, and the most consistent streaming performance across all platforms. At $1.99/mo it’s only $0.88/mo more than PrivadoVPN and actually cheaper than IPVanish. Read my full Surfshark review or grab the current deal (87% OFF + 3 extra months free).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IPVanish or PrivadoVPN faster?

IPVanish is faster overall, with approximately 92% speed retention in my testing versus PrivadoVPN’s ~85%. The difference is most noticeable on distant servers (Japan, Australia) where IPVanish maintains a clearer edge. On nearby servers (US, Europe), both VPNs feel equally fast in day-to-day use — the numerical gap rarely translates to a noticeable experience difference for browsing, streaming, or video calls.

Which is better for Netflix — IPVanish or PrivadoVPN?

Both work well with Netflix. PrivadoVPN actually covers more regional libraries reliably (US, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, Brazil tested and working), including on the free plan. IPVanish covers US, UK, Japan, and India. For Netflix specifically, PrivadoVPN has a slight edge in breadth of library coverage.

Which is better for Amazon Prime Video?

IPVanish is more consistent with Prime Video. PrivadoVPN successfully detects the VPN on many servers, making reliable Prime Video access hit-or-miss. If Prime Video is a priority, IPVanish is the better choice between these two — though for the most consistent Prime Video experience across all VPNs, NordVPN or Surfshark perform better still.

Does PrivadoVPN’s free plan really work for torrenting?

Yes. PrivadoVPN allows P2P traffic on all servers, including the free plan. The 10GB monthly data cap is the main constraint — that’s roughly 2–3 hours of P2P activity at typical speeds. For occasional torrenting, it works. For frequent torrenting, the Premium plan removes the data cap. Note that neither PrivadoVPN nor IPVanish supports port forwarding — if that’s a requirement, look at PIA or Proton VPN.

Is IPVanish safe despite the 2016 incident?

For typical users, the current IPVanish is a reasonable choice — it’s been through two independent audits, publishes quarterly transparency reports showing zero disclosures, and is now owned by Ziff Davis rather than the company responsible for the 2016 compliance. For privacy-critical users (journalists, activists, anyone in a high-risk situation), the combination of US jurisdiction and documented logging history is sufficient reason to choose Proton VPN, Mullvad, or PrivadoVPN’s Swiss jurisdiction instead.

Which is better for Firestick users — IPVanish or PrivadoVPN?

IPVanish, without question. Its native Firestick app is one of the best-designed VPN apps for Fire TV — well-optimized for remote navigation, native in the Amazon Appstore, and it includes a dedicated Kill Switch app for Fire TV (addressing the platform’s lack of native split tunneling). If Fire TV or Firestick is your primary VPN use case, IPVanish is the right choice.

Can I pay anonymously with either VPN?

PrivadoVPN accepts Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies via CoinGate — enabling near-anonymous signup. IPVanish does not accept cryptocurrency or any anonymous payment method. If anonymous payment matters to you, PrivadoVPN is the pick between these two.

Do either of these VPNs work in China?

Neither IPVanish nor PrivadoVPN works reliably in China or other countries with heavy internet restrictions (UAE, Russia, Iran). For use in restrictive countries, ExpressVPN and NordVPN are the more consistent options from my recommendation list.

Which VPN has better customer support?

IPVanish has a significant support advantage. It offers 24/7 live chat, email support, and a weekday phone line — phone support being genuinely rare in the VPN industry. PrivadoVPN is email-only, though response times are faster than expected (under 20 minutes in my testing). If support accessibility matters to you, IPVanish wins clearly.

Who owns IPVanish and PrivadoVPN?

IPVanish is owned by Ziff Davis, a US-based digital media company. It is not part of the Kape Technologies group that owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and PIA. PrivadoVPN is owned by Privado Networks AG, incorporated in Switzerland — independent of all major VPN conglomerates. Both have ownership structures that VPN buyers specifically trying to avoid Kape Technologies would find acceptable.
