ExpressVPN has been at the top of the VPN game for some time – and with good reason. The company has been operating since 2009 and really knows what it is doing. ExpressVPN is currently dominating the VPN market, along with a few other services. With an ExpressVPN subscription, you’ll have access to a vast network with over 3,000 servers in 160 different locations across 94 countries.
Also, you can use this subscription on up to five devices at the same time. The quality of connections is excellent and allows you to browse, stream and download freely with impressive speeds. In addition, the security and encryption of the software meet the highest international standards and will protect you from any interference and spying by third parties.
The company is officially located in the British Virgin Islands, which means that it has no legal obligation to keep records of user usage. ExpressVPN is extremely easy to use, making using VPNs simple for the general public. You don’t need to be an experienced user to use ExpressVPN apps. Also, the website and customer service are very helpful, and the apps are completely intuitive.

ExpressVPN is a remarkable VPN that opens a lot of virtual doors for you. This provider is perfect for protecting your privacy and online information. Since ExpressVPN offers incredibly fast and stable connections and the software can be activated with a single click, this provider has quickly become an absolute favourite among our team.
Works well at almost every turn, whether you want to access streams abroad (including the American version of Netflix) and browse without prying eyes invading your privacy. While this provider is slightly more expensive, it’s definitely worth the money.
Speed – How Fast is ExpressVPN?
Connection speed is important, especially if you want to do more than just browse the internet with your VPN. If your internet connection isn’t fast enough, there may be performance drops when downloading, watching videos, and playing games. For that reason, we ran some tests to see if and to what extent ExpressVPN would slow down your connection.
First, we did some speed tests that we did with and without using VPN, to see if there would be any significant differences. We’ll also show you ExpressVPN speed test results during daily use. Finally, we will talk about the speed test of ExpressVPN itself, which is integrated into the app. Here are our main takeaways about ExpressVPN speed:
- You keep a decent share of your internet speed when using ExpressVPN
- There was no noticeable change in speed during daily use
- ExpressVPN offers its own built-in speed test
ExpressVPN speed test results
We test speed at our own location (the Netherlands), so your results may vary depending on your current location. In addition, factors such as your ISP and data limit also affect your connection speed. Therefore, the results shown here only provide an indication of the possible results. However, they can tell us something about the effect ExpressVPN servers will generally have on your internet speed.
Speed without a VPN (Speedtest.net):
These were the results of our connection without a VPN. We will use these results as a reference to compare with the other results.
Speed with a local server (Speedtest.net):
The numbers above were the measured results when we connected to a local ExpressVPN server. A nearby server will likely give better results, as large distances between you and the server can cause lag. As you can see, the ping has gone up a bit, but it’s still pretty good. Download and upload speeds have slowed down but are still decent.
Speed with a distant server (Speedtest.net):
When we connected to the fastest ExpressVPN server available in the US (far away from the Netherlands), we got the results shown above. It’s clear that the ping has gone up quite a bit, which theoretically could be a problem if you want to play multiplayer games online. The download speed hasn’t changed much compared to the local server. The upload speed has slowed down, but it’s still reasonable.
This result does not mean that the US ExpressVPN servers are of lower quality than the local ones. On the contrary, they are great. When you connect to a server that is far away, you always lose some speed and have a significant increase in ping.
These results show that ExpressVPN servers, even ones that are far from where you might be, are still pretty good. If you live in the US and try an American server, your results will likely be better than ours and more similar to our experience with local servers.
Speed during daily use
When we used ExpressVPN in daily use, its speed turned out to be excellent. We didn’t experience any performance loss during normal browsing, visiting websites and working on our own website. We also had no problems with streaming and downloading. We were able to watch the videos on YouTube and use Netflix without any problem. In addition, we were able to download files of all types and sizes easily.
When using the recommended servers, we didn’t notice any lag during the game. However, in this case, it is important to connect to servers that are not too far from your current location, otherwise your ping may increase. Overall, ExpressVPN is the perfect VPN for gaming. Overall, we were able to maintain great internet speed using ExpressVPN, without any significant drops.
ExpressVPN speed test
ExpressVPN has a speed test built into its app.
If you click on the “Speed Test” option, you will be able to start a speed test of your computer on all ExpressVPN servers. This takes a few seconds and will only work when the VPN is not activated, but you will have a clear list of servers and their performance with your internet connection. This is perfect if you are looking for the ideal server for your location.
The test will show the latency, also known as ping in games. It will also show download speeds and an overall speed rating. On the ExpressVPN website, you will find a simplified guide, which explains in detail how the tool works and will help you choose the best servers.
Security – Is ExpressVPN secure?
Perhaps the most important feature of a VPN is keeping you safe online. It encrypts all your data traffic and keeps your online actions anonymous most of the time. ExpressVPN has the highest international standards and offers great security options.
Next, you’ll find information about all the protocols the company supports, their registration and privacy policies, the kill switch, and the personal data ExpressVPN needs to create your account. These are the most important conclusions about ExpressVPN’s security:
- ExpressVPN uses 256-bit encryption
- You can choose between OpenVPN UDP, OpenVPN TCP, L2TP/IPSec, IKEv2/IPsec and Lightway protocols
- ExpressVPN has a kill switch option
- ExpressVPN uses TrustedServer technology that uses RAM memory
- To create an account, you just need an email address and payment method.
ExpressVPN uses 256-bit encryption and recommends using the OpenVPN UDP protocol, which is selected as the service’s default protocol. These are the highest international standards for encryption, so you don’t have to worry about your privacy. ExpressVPN supports the following protocols:
- OpenVPN UDP : The best combination of speed and security, but it doesn’t work on all networks.
- OpenVPN TCP : It is likely to work on all networks and is undoubtedly the most secure protocol, but slower than UDP.
- L2TP/IPSec : Lower security – useful for anonymity and changing your location when other protocols don’t work.
- IKEv2/IPSec : Generally very fast, but may not work on all types of networks and devices and offers fewer configuration options than OpenVPN. It works on iOS, OpenVPN does not.
- Lightway (beta): A new protocol that ExpressVPN is working on. It is still in the testing phase and we do not recommend using it at this time.
We recommend that you use ExpressVPN’s default configuration, as they offer the best protection you can get with any VPN. If you want to know more about this topic, check out our article comparing all the different VPN protocols.
It’s good to realize, though, that not all ExpressVPN servers support every protocol. L2TP/IPsec and PPTP are only supported by a select number of servers worldwide. Also, PPTP is not a protocol supported by any ExpressVPN software.
They kind of support it, just because some routers only support PPTP as a protocol. They don’t want to endorse the protocol too much because it’s not that secure, but they also don’t want to turn down any clients with a VPN router.
With the Lightway protocol, they hope to be able to promise customers a faster, safer, more reliable and more stable VPN experience. For example, ExpressVPN claims that connection speeds will improve thanks to Lightway. In addition, ExpressVPN indicates that it will soon open source the Lightway code, which will contribute to the security of the protocol. After all, this way anyone can inspect the code, which should also be relatively easy as the code base will be relatively small according to ExpressVPN.
It is not yet known when this new protocol will be available for general use. Currently, Lightway is only available to all ExpressVPN beta testers.
Privacy and usage registration
ExpressVPN is officially located in the British Virgin Islands. This might make you think it’s part of Britain, but these islands are an independent nation with strict privacy laws (which is good for users). That’s why ExpressVPN doesn’t need to keep any data on its servers. This means that they are not required to keep records of usage.
Therefore, ExpressVPN does not keep any traffic or IP logs. Therefore, they do not have any information about your online activities. The only type of log they keep are anonymous connection logs.
This type of record only reports the dates when the service was used and which server you connected to. This information is not linked to your IP, but to your user account. This means you can remain completely anonymous, using a special email address and paying in bitcoin. As they say:
“ We may even know THAT a customer used ExpressVPN, but never know HOW they used our services… ExpressVPN does not collect any IP addresses, browsing history, traffic data, DNS queries or anything else that could be used to identify any user in specific.”
In fact, ExpressVPN does not have the ability to save logs due to the new TrustedServer technology that the company implemented in 2019. Now, all data on the ExpressVPN servers is sent through RAM, which is a form of volatile (temporary) memory.
This means that all data is regularly deleted as the RAM memory needs electricity to function. Whenever there is a power outage, all collected data automatically disappears. This is a great solution for those who take their privacy seriously.
Also, ExpressVPN recently introduced something they call the “Digital Security Lab”. This is a research lab that focuses on the following:
- Investigate digital rights and security issues and educate consumers about them.
- Creating tools and resources to empower individuals.
- Conduct community outreach to share your work.
This shows us that they are more than just a VPN provider. They really want to make a difference when it comes to online privacy and security.
Kill switch (off button)
After connecting through ExpressVPN secure tunnels, VPN connection drops can occur for various reasons. This could mean that your data would be unprotected until you reconnect to the ExpressVPN server. It is likely that you want to prevent this from happening.
ExpressVPN offers an extra security element for Windows and Mac: kill switch. Once you enable the kill switch, you will never be unprotected again. If your VPN connection drops, the kill switch will block all internet access. So, there won’t be any weak spots in your online activity.
Something to note is that the kill switch is sometimes activated when switching networks. When you’re connecting to a new server, for example, or when you switch data to Wi-Fi. You will not receive any messages, but you will need to unblock the internet manually by clicking the “unblock internet” button in the ExpressVPN software. Very safe, but not practical.
What information does ExpressVPN need?
To create an ExpressVPN account, all you need is an email address and a payment method. This means that you can remain completely anonymous if you use a temporary email and pay with bitcoins. Just ensure that the email is not linked to you in any way, no one will have access to your identity.
Usability – Is ExpressVPN easy to use?
Considering that the internet can be a complex place, it is essential that a good VPN service offers high-quality customer support. Figuring out which settings to use or which server to connect to can be quite difficult if your VPN service doesn’t have an easy-to-navigate website or well-developed program.
Below, you’ll find all about ExpressVPN’s ease of use. Let’s take a look at the company’s website, installation process, program, pricing, and customer support. These are our main takeaways about ExpressVPN’s usability:
- The ExpressVPN website is clear and helpful
- The ExpressVPN installation process is extremely easy for all devices and operating systems
- ExpressVPN software works intuitively
- ExpressVPN is a little more expensive than other VPN services
- They offer a good amount of payment methods.
- ExpressVPN works fine in combination with Linux, but their support agents don’t know much about Linux-specific issues
- ExpressVPN has excellent 24/7 customer support with a live chat box
The ExpressVPN installation process is extremely easy and fast. With the installation wizard available, you will be able to access the internet anonymously in a few minutes.
The ExpressVPN program is available for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Linux. You can also install the ExpressVPN program on your DD-WRT router.
ExpressVPN offers the following three-step guide on the company’s website:
It may seem overly simplified, but the installation is actually easy. After purchasing your subscription, simply visit the site’s setup page. You select the program for your device, operating system and install. The app will open, and you can see how intuitive it is. You can also find the ExpressVPN mobile app at any app store. The download process is the same for all devices.
ExpressVPN look and feel
The look of the ExpressVPN program is very professional and attractive. Using it is pretty clear and self-explanatory. Most users will only need an easy to identify on and off button and a simple way to change the server location. The ExpressVPN app shows you how to do this. What’s more, it’s not polluted with information you don’t understand or need. That’s why ExpressVPN is ideal for people who have never used any VPN.
In the menu at the top left, you will find options to edit your VPN connection settings if you wish. You can also do a speed test and open the help menu if you have questions.
ExpressVPN and Linux
Like all other VPN providers, ExpressVPN allows you to use their services with Linux. In fact, ExpressVPN can be used with Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Raspbian and Arch. In other words, there are few operating systems where ExpressVPN doesn’t work. Below you will find a brief summary on using ExpressVPN on Linux.
The entire network of ExpressVPN servers is also available for Linux users. Not only that, the servers are also state-of-the-art regarding speed and stability. During testing, we didn’t find any DNS requests or leaks from WebRTCs.
Since everything is done through the terminal, it is important to find the right page to download the deposit and learn the basic commands. And that’s all. Apart from the Firefox extension and the kill switch, there is no other feature of the ExpressVPN app for Linux. You just ask for the server list and connect to whatever you want.
The only problem we had during testing was the lack of knowledge for the support team regarding Linux. This can end up making it difficult to resolve any difficulties you may have. Still, ExpressVPN is number one on our list of the best VPNs for Linux.
Prices and payment methods
Perhaps the only downside to ExpressVPN is the price. But while this VPN isn’t that cheap, ExpressVPN is definitely worth the price it charges.
ExpressVPN offers three different subscription plans. All three plans offer the same high-quality service, the only difference is the duration of the plan and the monthly cost. They offer a one-month plan for $12.95, a 6-month plan for $9.99 a month, and with our special offer, you can subscribe to ExpressVPN’s 15-month plan for just $6. .67 per month.
The last option is great, mainly for the quality offered. Additionally, ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means that you will be able to test the services for 30 days and request a refund if you don’t like it.
ExpressVPN accepts the following payment methods:
- Credit Card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Card, JCB, Diners Club International)
- Many other regional payment methods.
With these options, you will undoubtedly be able to find a suitable payment method for you. If you want to remain completely anonymous, even to your VPN provider, you can use Bitcoin to pay for your subscription. We also recommend that you use an anonymous email address to sign up.
Unlike some other services, ExpressVPN has a good frequently asked questions (FAQ) page that will answer virtually all your questions instantly.
However, the layout of the menus is not very clear, and it took us a while to find information about supported protocols, for example. We also didn’t find this information through the search bar.
The FAQ page doesn’t offer much information, but ExpressVPN offers excellent customer service.
They provide 24/7, tactful customer service and website visitors. The attendants respond quickly and pleasantly to any queries you may have.
If you have a problem with the service, they will help you figure out what the problem is and how to resolve it.
ExpressVPN server network
A VPN’s server network is important if you want to avoid geographic restrictions by connecting to servers in other countries. For example, you can connect to a server in the US to watch a series on the US version of Netflix. Also, if your government censors what you can do and see online, you can redirect your connection through a server in another country to get free internet access.
Here, you will get additional information about ExpressVPN servers and whether ExpressVPN offers dedicated IP addresses. Below, you can find out more about the ExpressVPN server network. The most important things to note about server networking are:
- ExpressVPN has over 3,000 servers in 94 different countries
- ExpressVPN does not offer dedicated IP addresses
Number of servers and location
ExpressVPN has over 3,000 servers in 94 countries around the world. Thanks to this immense network of servers, you will always find a server that meets your needs. Plus, you can change servers as often and as often as you like when using ExpressVPN.
The countries where ExpressVPN has VPN servers are:
- Americas : Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.
- Europe : Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Island de Man, Italy, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
- Asia Pacific : Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Korea South, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
- Middle East and Africa : Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Kenya and South Africa.
With ExpressVPN apps, it’s straightforward to select a server, and you can also save your favourite servers to make that selection even easier to find them again.
In addition, ExpressVPN indicates a recommended server for your location. This server will likely have the fastest connection for you.
Dedicated IP address
ExpressVPN does not offer a dedicated IP address service. People often use dedicated IP addresses to access Netflix. With ExpressVPN, you don’t need a dedicated IP to access Netflix, as this is already possible with the services already offered.
Another reason to use a dedicated IP is when some sites ask for extra information if you visit the site from a different IP address all the time. If you want to avoid these extra measures from your bank or government, you can opt for a VPN service that offers dedicated IP addresses, such as NordVPN.
There are some features that not all VPN providers offer, but they can be very important for users. For example, you cannot just use any VPN to unblock Netflix content from other countries. In fact, some VPNs don’t work with Netflix.
Also, for some, the option to download torrents through P2P networks is important. Another option that not all VPNs offer. We tested these features for ExpressVPN. You can also find information here about two extra features that ExpressVPN offers.
First, let’s look at the provider’s router offering. Finally, you can read about their easy-to-use browser extension, which makes using ExpressVPN effortless. These are the most important options that ExpressVPN offers:
- Netflix, Disney Plus, and Hulu work with ExpressVPN
- ExpressVPN allows you to download torrents
- You can find the right routers on the ExpressVPN website
- ExpressVPN has a browser extension
ExpressVPN and Netflix
It’s proven difficult for VPN services to stay ahead of Netflix blocks. The streaming service started blocking IP addresses used by many people at the same time (like those used by many VPN servers). Netflix doesn’t want people to use their service through VPNs.
Most VPN services have given up the fight, which means you can only watch Netflix with a dedicated IP. However, ExpressVPN is still in the fight, and they always have servers that let you watch Netflix without any problem. Because it’s a constant struggle, not all ExpressVPN servers work with Netflix.
But if you ask the ExpressVPN customer service for help, they will point you to the right server, which will let you watch your favourite show on Netflix without any problem. That’s why ExpressVPN tops our list of the best VPN providers for watching Netflix.
ExpressVPN and US streaming services (Disney+, Hulu)
ExpressVPN also works perfectly fine for watching popular streaming services. With an American ExpressVPN server, you can watch both Disney Plus and Hulu quickly and easily. Other servers outside the US (such as one in the Netherlands) also work with Disney Plus. The Disney Plus is not available for most countries.
So, know that you probably won’t be able to access the platform with a server in one of these countries. Since Hulu does not work outside the US, you will always need a US server to use this service. In short, if you use the right ExpressVPN server, you can securely access and watch your favourite streaming service without any restrictions.
ExpressVPN and torrents
ExpressVPN allows you to download torrents anonymously. Connection speeds with ExpressVPN will be high enough to download files without too much delay. Plus, with the complete protection offered, you can remain completely anonymous.
ExpressVPN recently introduced a new feature: TrustedServer. This technology ensures that your data, as well as that of all ExpressVPN customers, is 100% secure. No data is saved on the company’s hard drive, so it cannot be stolen. In addition, TrustedServer helps the entire ExpressVPN system stay up to date. This greatly reduces the chances of their being weak points in the system.
All data on ExpressVPN servers is sent through RAM. The great advantage of working with this technique is that all data is automatically deleted whenever the connection or electricity goes out. This method is different from the one used by hard drives, where the data remains even after your session ends.
With TrustedServer, ExpressVPN simply cannot save any logs of your internet usage. Thus, hackers, governments and other institutions will not be able to access your data because there will be no data to be accessed.
ExpressVPN offers split tunnelling option. This VPN feature is very useful and allows you to choose which services are routed through the VPN and which ones can connect directly to the internet. You can find this option in the ExpressVPN settings.
You can configure split tunneling in two ways:
- Excluding programs: For example, do you want all your apps except Firefox to use VPN? Then you can configure ExpressVPN so that only Firefox is not routed through the encrypted tunnel.
- Allowing only certain programs: This can be very useful when you only want to use your VPN for specific tasks, like torrenting. You can add the torrent program in the ExpressVPN split tunnelling settings.
Split tunnelling is ideal for bypassing online restrictions and accessing more online content without interfering with common services. In addition, it increases the speed of apps that are not using the VPN tunnel.
In addition to its regular servers, ExpressVPN also offers hidden servers. These servers completely hide browser traffic and VPN traffic. As a result, internet traffic no longer looks like VPN traffic. It looks like you are a regular internet user and this makes it easier to bypass blocks. Hidden servers aim to bypass the strongest blocks.
Countries like China are constantly trying to avoid using VPNs. This means that some VPN providers have a hard time continuing to work in China. Hidden servers are special servers that manage to unlock a free internet, even in the most censored countries. Because of these hidden servers, ExpressVPN works very well in countries with strict censorship.
ExpressVPN on your router
Installing a VPN on your router is the ideal way to protect all the equipment in your home at once. However, this can be quite tricky as you need the right kind of router. Also, you will need to change the firmware of the router (flashing) to prepare it for a VPN.
ExpressVPN helps you make this process much easier. On the company’s website, there are links to the best routers with pre-installed firmware. With these routers, you will ensure that the VPN software can be installed. To make this process even easier, ExpressVPN has installation instructions for the most popular routers on the site.
Extensions for browsers
After you subscribe to ExpressVPN, you can install the service extension in your browser. They offer an extension for Chrome, Firefox and Safari. The advantage of the extension is that you will not need to open the ExpressVPN program, being able to go directly to the browser. You will see a small ExpressVPN logo in the browser, which shows whether the service is enabled or not. When you click on the icon, you will see an interface very similar to that of the program or application. There, you will be able to enable or disable the VPN and change the location of your server.
With the extension, ExpressVPN tried to make using a VPN even easier. Laziness is no longer an excuse to browse the internet unprotected!
Conclusion – Our Experience with ExpressVPN
Unsurprisingly, ExpressVPN has been at the top of our list for some time now. ExpressVPN performs well on all the most important aspects of a VPN service. The company offers great speeds and stable connections. Whether browsing the web or playing hardcore games, ExpressVPN will encrypt your data without causing any lag or loading issues.
ExpressVPN works with the highest international encryption standards. Their privacy and registration policies ensure that you don’t have to worry about your anonymity. Also, with the kill switch enabled, there will be no room for data leakage.
What makes ExpressVPN an interesting VPN service is the ease of use they offer. The website and software work intuitively and have a clean look. This makes the services accessible to anyone, whether an experienced gamer or a conventional internet user.
While ExpressVPN is not a cheap service, they are at the top of most lists of best VPN services, and they deserve to be there. For the service they offer, they could even charge a little more. When we’re not testing other VPN services, we use ExpressVPN often, simply for the good quality of service.
When choosing between two VPN providers, it’s important to note the similarities and differences between the two. ExpressVPN holds up very well compared to the other top VPNs. In fact, not only is it the highest-rated VPN, it also outperforms many of the other VPNs in a number of different ways. If you want to read more about how ExpressVPN compares to CyberGhost, Surfshark or NordVPN, take a look at the articles below:
