IPVanish Antivirus is the biggest upgrade IPVanish has shipped in years. It launched on October 7, 2026 inside the Windows and macOS apps, and it’s powered by VIPRE, the security brand that sits under the same parent company as IPVanish (Ziff Davis). You manage scans, real-time protection and web filtering from the same app where you pick a VPN server, with no separate dashboard to learn.
This is the next step after Threat Protection Pro, which IPVanish launched in March 2026 for Advanced subscribers. Threat Protection Pro was mainly a web and download filter. The new Antivirus goes much further with full device scanning, quarantine, behavioral monitoring and ransomware defenses. In practice, IPVanish has gone from “a VPN with a web filter” to “a VPN with a real antivirus.” I cover it in depth in my dedicated IPVanish Antivirus review.

As a cybersecurity professional, the layer I value most is behavioral detection. A lot of modern malware is repackaged or brand new, so signature matching alone misses it. Watching what a process actually does, like suddenly encrypting hundreds of documents, catches threats a signature database can’t. I also like that external drives are included, because USB sticks passed between computers are still a classic infection route.

How retention is calculated: VPN-connected speed ÷ speed without the VPN × 100. For example, 465 ÷ 500 × 100 = 93%. Your own results depend on your starting connection, device, protocol and distance to the server.
What this means for everyday use
- Streaming: keeping 93% of a healthy connection leaves plenty of headroom for 4K video on several devices at once.
- Downloads: a bandwidth-limited download takes roughly 7.5% longer than without the VPN.
- Gaming: ping and jitter matter more than raw speed, so pick a nearby server and check latency.
- Antivirus overhead: the new Antivirus runs on your computer, not in the tunnel. Like any real-time scanner, a full scan uses some CPU while it runs, so I schedule mine for off-hours.
How to get the best speed from IPVanish

IPVanish’s privacy story includes independent audits and a historical incident that deserves clear disclosure. An honest review needs both.
Protocols and encryption
WireGuard and OpenVPN are the main protocols. WireGuard uses ChaCha20-Poly1305 and is my default for everyday speed. OpenVPN with AES-256 is useful for compatible routers or networks where WireGuard won’t connect. Protocol availability varies by platform.
Independent no-logs audits
IPVanish’s no-logs policy has been audited by Leviathan Security Group in 2022 and Schellman in 2025. Those audits are real evidence beyond marketing, but they apply to the systems and period examined, so I always recommend checking the latest report and privacy policy.
The 2016 logging incident
In 2016, under previous ownership, IPVanish provided connection information to US authorities during a criminal investigation despite its no-logs claims at the time. The ownership changes and later audits are meaningful, but they don’t erase that history. If you face a high-risk threat model, Proton VPN is my pick for privacy.
Account data vs VPN activity
A no-logs policy covers VPN activity and connection data. Account details, payments and support requests are separate. IPVanish is US-based and owned by Ziff Davis, which also owns VIPRE. Because Antivirus runs through the IPVanish app, it’s worth reading how the privacy policy handles malware telemetry such as suspicious file samples.
Leak protection and kill switch
I found no DNS, IPv6 or WebRTC leaks in my tests. The kill switch blocks traffic if the VPN drops; enable it and test how your device behaves during a disconnect. On Fire TV, check the kill switch settings for your device.
Threat Protection, Secure Browser and Double Hop
Threat Protection (all plans) blocks known malicious domains, ads and trackers. On Windows and Mac, the higher tiers now replace it with the full Antivirus and its web protection layer.
Secure Browser gives you an isolated browsing environment on the higher tiers. Link Checker and QR Code Checker use VIPRE’s threat intelligence to flag dangerous links before you open them. Double Hop routes traffic through two VPN servers for extra separation, with a speed cost.
Torrenting with IPVanish
IPVanish allows P2P traffic on its servers and includes a SOCKS5 proxy. A SOCKS5 proxy doesn’t encrypt your traffic, so I recommend using the full VPN and binding your torrent client to the VPN interface. The new Antivirus is a real plus here, because it scans downloaded files as they land on your disk.
The catch: IPVanish doesn’t support port forwarding. If you seed heavily on private trackers, PrivateVPN or Proton VPN are better fits.
