The UK has quietly become one of the toughest places in Europe to browse the internet privately. Between the Investigatory Powers Act forcing ISPs to store your browsing history for up to 12 months, and the Online Safety Act rolling out mandatory age verification checks that ask for your ID or a face scan, British internet users are handing over more personal data than ever just to use the web.

I have spent the last two years testing VPNs full time across my two YouTube channels, and for this guide I re-tested my top providers specifically for UK use: real speed tests on UK servers, unblocking attempts on BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK, and a close look at how each provider handles UK data laws.

The short version: Surfshark is the best VPN for the UK in 2026. It was the fastest VPN in my tests with around 95% speed retention, it unblocked every UK streaming service I threw at it, and its unlimited device policy makes it a no-brainer for households full of gadgets. Below you will find my full top 7, all tested by me.

Why You Need a VPN in the UK in 2026

I get asked this constantly on my channels, so let me be direct. There are three big reasons UK users are signing up for VPNs in record numbers right now.

Age verification under the Online Safety Act. Since these checks went live, a growing list of websites now demands photo ID, credit card checks or facial scans before letting you in. Handing your passport details to a third-party verification company just to browse the web is a privacy disaster waiting to happen. A VPN lets you connect from a server outside the UK, where these checks do not apply.

ISP surveillance and data retention. Under the Investigatory Powers Act, your internet provider is legally required to keep a record of the websites you visit for up to 12 months, and dozens of government agencies can request that data. A VPN encrypts your traffic so your ISP sees nothing but scrambled data heading to a VPN server.

Streaming UK TV from abroad. BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 all block viewers outside the UK. If you are a Brit on holiday, an expat, or you simply want to catch the Six Nations or a Premier League match shown on free-to-air UK TV, a VPN with reliable UK servers is the only practical way in.

Is a VPN legal in the UK? Yes, completely. There is no law against using a VPN in the United Kingdom. Anything that is illegal without a VPN remains illegal with one, but the tool itself is perfectly lawful and widely used.

UK VPN Comparison: Speed, Price and Streaming

Here is how all seven providers stack up based on my own speed testing and the current deals available through my links. Speed retention is the percentage of my baseline connection speed each VPN kept when connected to a UK server.

1. Surfshark: Best VPN for the UK Overall

Surfshark has been my number one recommendation for a while now, and my latest UK testing only confirmed it. In my speed tests it retained around 95% of my baseline connection, which made it the fastest VPN I tested on UK servers. In practical terms, that means 4K streaming on BBC iPlayer with zero buffering, smooth downloads, and browsing that feels no different from having the VPN off.

Unblocking was flawless in my testing. BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK all loaded first time from Surfshark’s UK servers, which cover London, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. That spread matters: if you are in Scotland, connecting to Glasgow instead of London gives you noticeably lower ping.

Surfshark VPN UK

The killer feature for UK households is unlimited simultaneous connections. One subscription covers every phone, laptop, tablet, Fire Stick and smart TV in the house. Most rivals cap you at 10 devices, and NordVPN still does. For a family, that alone can justify the choice.

On the privacy side, Surfshark runs RAM-only servers, holds an independently audited no-logs policy, and its CleanWeb feature blocks a good chunk of ads and trackers. My one honest gripe: CleanWeb can occasionally interfere with the ad-supported streams on ITVX and Channel 4. Toggling it off for those services fixes it in seconds, but it is worth knowing.

The plan I recommend is Surfshark One at $2.79 a month on the 2-year deal (85% off plus 3 extra months free). It bundles antivirus, a private search tool and data breach alerts on top of the VPN, and it is the best quality-to-price ratio in the industry right now.

What I liked

  • Fastest VPN in my UK tests (~95% speed retention)
  • Unblocked BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK first time
  • Unlimited simultaneous devices
  • Audited no-logs policy and RAM-only servers
  • Excellent value at $2.79/mo on the One plan

What I didn’t like

  • CleanWeb ad blocker needs disabling for ITVX and Channel 4 ad breaks
  • Dedicated IP addresses cost extra

2. IPVanish: Most UK Server Cities and Unlimited Devices

IPVanish surprises a lot of people, and it earns second place here for one simple reason: no other VPN on this list gives you as many UK locations. You can connect in Belfast, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Manchester. Wherever you are in the UK, or wherever you are streaming UK TV from, there is a nearby exit point.

Speeds were excellent in my testing at around 92% retention, tied with Proton VPN for second fastest overall. IPVanish leans on WireGuard, and it shows. I streamed BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK without a hiccup, and its Scramble obfuscation feature is handy if you are on a restrictive work or university network.

IPVanish UK

Like Surfshark, IPVanish allows unlimited simultaneous connections, and at $2.19 a month on the 24-month Essential plan (83% off, currently with a 3 GB eSIM data gift thrown in) it is one of the cheapest ways to protect a whole household.

The honest downside is jurisdiction. IPVanish is based in the United States, a founding member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. Its no-logs policy has been independently audited, which genuinely matters, but if jurisdiction is your top concern, Proton VPN or PrivadoVPN in Switzerland will sit better with you.

What I liked

  • Six UK server cities, the most on this list
  • ~92% speed retention in my tests
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Independently audited no-logs policy
  • Very affordable at $2.19/mo

What I didn’t like

  • US jurisdiction (Five Eyes member)
  • Struggled with a couple of foreign Netflix libraries

Read my full IPVanish review or check the latest pricing on the IPVanish coupon page.

3. VeePN: Best Budget VPN for Streaming UK TV

If your main goal is streaming UK telly on a tight budget, VeePN is the pick I keep coming back to. At $1.99 a month on the 2-year plan (83% off plus 4 extra months free), it undercuts almost every big name while still handling the essentials properly.

In my testing, VeePN unblocked BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 from its UK servers, and its roughly 88% speed retention was more than enough for smooth HD and 4K streams. The network covers 2,500+ servers across 60+ countries, which is smaller than the giants but perfectly adequate for UK use, and you get 10 simultaneous connections per account.

VeePN UK

Security is solid if unspectacular: AES-256 encryption, WireGuard support, a kill switch and a no-logs policy. Where VeePN falls behind the top of this list is transparency. It has not gone through the same drumbeat of independent audits as Surfshark or Proton VPN, and its UK server presence is thinner, so during peak evening hours I occasionally had to switch servers to keep top speeds.

What I liked

  • Excellent price at $1.99/mo with 4 months free
  • Unblocked BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 in my tests
  • Solid ~88% speed retention for the price
  • 10 simultaneous connections

What I didn’t like

  • Fewer independent audits than the top picks
  • Smaller UK server presence, occasional peak-hour congestion

Read my full VeePN review or see current deals on the VeePN coupon page.

4. Proton VPN: Best VPN for Privacy in the UK

Given how aggressively UK surveillance law has expanded, I think every British user should at least consider a Swiss VPN, and Proton VPN is the best of them. It is headquartered in Switzerland, well outside the Five Eyes alliance, its apps are fully open source, and its no-logs policy has been independently audited. If your priority is keeping your browsing away from ISP retention and government data requests, this is the strongest privacy posture on this list.

Crucially, Proton does not make you pay for that privacy with poor performance. It retained around 92% of my baseline speed on UK servers, matching IPVanish, and its VPN Accelerator feature genuinely helps when connecting to UK servers from far away. In my streaming tests it handled BBC iPlayer and ITVX reliably; Channel 4 needed the occasional server switch, which is why I call it “mostly” rather than flawless.

Proton VPN UK

The Secure Core feature routes your traffic through hardened servers in Switzerland or Iceland before it exits, which is real protection against network-level snooping. And Proton runs the only free VPN I actually trust: unlimited data, no ads, no logs. The free tier will not let you pick a UK server, so it is not a streaming solution, but as a free privacy tool it has no equal apart from PrivadoVPN’s free plan below.

What I liked

  • Swiss jurisdiction, outside Five Eyes
  • Open source apps and audited no-logs policy
  • ~92% speed retention in my tests
  • Secure Core multi-hop servers
  • Genuinely trustworthy free tier with unlimited data

What I didn’t like

  • Channel 4 occasionally needed a server switch
  • Free plan does not let you choose your server location

Read my full Proton VPN review or check the Proton VPN coupon page for the current 70% discount.

5. PrivadoVPN: Cheapest VPN for the UK

PrivadoVPN wins on price, full stop. At $1.11 a month on the 2-year plan (90% off plus 3 extra months free), nothing else on this list comes close, and it is Swiss-based, which puts it in the same privacy-friendly jurisdiction as Proton VPN.

Despite the bargain price, it did the job in my UK streaming tests: BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 all worked from its UK servers. It also offers the best free VPN plan I have tested. You get 10 GB of data per month on the free tier with actual server selection, which makes it far more usable than most free offerings if you just need occasional protection.

PrivadoVPN UK

The trade-offs are real, though. At roughly 85% speed retention, PrivadoVPN was the slowest premium pick in my testing alongside PIA. That is still plenty for HD streaming and everyday browsing, but if you have gigabit fibre you will feel the difference. The server network is also small at a few hundred servers, so peak-time congestion is more noticeable than with the bigger names.

What I liked

  • Cheapest premium VPN here at $1.11/mo
  • Swiss jurisdiction and a no-logs policy
  • Best free VPN plan I have tested (10 GB/month)
  • Unblocked BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 in my tests

What I didn’t like

  • Slowest of my premium picks (~85% retention)
  • Small server network can get congested at peak times

6. ExpressVPN: Easiest VPN to Use in the UK

If you want a VPN that a complete beginner can install and forget about, ExpressVPN is still the smoothest experience in the industry. One button, instant connection, and apps for practically everything, including its own Aircove router with the VPN built in, which is the easiest way I know to cover every device in a UK home at once.

Performance held up well in my tests at around 91% speed retention, powered by its proprietary Lightway protocol. UK streaming was reliable: BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK all worked, though I occasionally needed a second attempt on iPlayer, which the top three on this list never required. Its British Virgin Islands jurisdiction keeps it outside UK data retention law, and it has racked up more independent audits than almost any competitor.

Two things keep it out of my top five. First, price: even at the current 78% discount ($2.79 a month with 4 extra months free), its renewal and monthly rates run higher than the value picks above. Second, in the interest of full transparency, ExpressVPN is owned by Kape Technologies, the same parent company behind CyberGhost and PIA. Its audit record helps offset that, but you deserve to know who owns the VPN you are trusting.

What I liked

  • The most polished, beginner-friendly apps around
  • ~91% speed retention with the Lightway protocol
  • Aircove router covers every device in the house
  • BVI jurisdiction and an extensive audit history

What I didn’t like

  • Pricier than the value picks on this list
  • Owned by Kape Technologies (also owns CyberGhost and PIA)
  • BBC iPlayer occasionally needed a second server attempt

Read my full ExpressVPN review or find the best current price on the ExpressVPN coupon page.

7. NordVPN: Biggest UK Server Network

NordVPN is a genuinely excellent VPN, and if raw UK server count is what you care about, it is unbeatable: 440+ UK servers spread across London, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Its security stack is superb too, with RAM-only servers, an audited no-logs policy under Panama jurisdiction, Double VPN, obfuscated servers and the Threat Protection ad and malware blocker.

Unblocking was perfect in my testing. BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK all worked without complaint, and streams were stable at 4K. So why is it seventh? Two reasons, and I want to be straight about both.

First, speed. NordVPN is one of the fastest VPNs on the market, but in my own testing Surfshark was faster, retaining around 95% of my baseline against NordVPN’s 89%. Second, value. At $3.59 a month on the current Plus plan deal (75% off plus 3 free months), it costs more than Surfshark while capping you at 10 devices instead of unlimited. It is a great service; the picks above simply offer more for less. You can see my full head-to-head in Surfshark vs NordVPN.

What I liked

  • 440+ UK servers across four cities
  • Perfect UK streaming record in my tests
  • RAM-only servers and audited no-logs policy
  • Threat Protection blocks ads and malware

What I didn’t like

  • Slower than Surfshark in my speed tests (~89% vs ~95%)
  • Pricier than Surfshark with a 10-device cap

How to Watch UK TV from Abroad with a VPN

This is the single most common question I get from UK expats and travellers, so here is the exact process I use. It takes about five minutes.

1

Pick a VPN that reliably unblocks UK streaming

Surfshark is my top pick here. It unblocked BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 first time in my tests, and it is fast enough for 4K.

2

Connect to a UK server

Open the app and pick a UK location. London is the safe default, but any UK city works. You now have a UK IP address.

3

Clear your browser cookies and cache

Streaming sites remember your old location through cookies. Clearing them stops iPlayer or ITVX from second-guessing your new UK IP.

4

Sign in or create your accounts

BBC iPlayer asks for an email and a UK postcode at signup. ITVX and Channel 4 only need an email address.

5

Start streaming

If you hit a region error, switch to a different UK server, restart the browser, and disable any ad-blocking extensions that might leak your location.

A quick note on the TV licence: watching live TV on any UK streaming platform, and anything at all on BBC iPlayer, legally requires a valid UK TV licence. On-demand content on ITVX and Channel 4 does not.

Are Free VPNs Safe to Use in the UK?

Mostly, no. The free VPN economy runs on your data: many free providers log your activity and sell it to advertisers, which defeats the entire point of using a VPN in a country with the UK’s surveillance record. Add tight data caps, throttled speeds and servers that BBC iPlayer blocked long ago, and the typical free VPN is a bad deal even at zero pounds.

There are exactly two free plans I am comfortable recommending. Proton VPN’s free tier gives you unlimited data with no ads and no logs, though you cannot pick your server, so it is useless for UK streaming. PrivadoVPN’s free plan gives you 10 GB a month with real server selection, which makes it the best free VPN overall in my testing.

My honest advice: with PrivadoVPN’s paid plan at $1.11 a month and VeePN at $1.99, a proper audited VPN now costs less per month than a single coffee. That is the route I would take.

How I Test VPNs for the UK

Everything in this guide comes from my own hands-on testing. I buy every subscription with my own money on the same public plans you would get, then run each provider through the same process I have used across 500+ VPN videos on my channels.

For this UK guide specifically, I measured speed retention against my baseline connection on UK servers, attempted to unblock BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK across multiple sessions and servers, ran DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leak tests, stress-tested each kill switch by forcing connection drops, and verified the audit history and jurisdiction of every provider. I also weigh real-world value: current pricing, device allowances and how painless the money-back guarantee actually is to claim.

Best VPN for the UK: FAQ

What is the best VPN for the UK in 2026?

Based on my testing, Surfshark is the best VPN for the UK in 2026. It was the fastest VPN I tested at around 95% speed retention, it unblocked BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Netflix UK first time, and it supports unlimited devices from $2.79 a month.

Are VPNs legal in the UK?

Yes. Using a VPN is completely legal in the United Kingdom. There is no legislation banning or restricting VPN use. Illegal activity remains illegal whether or not a VPN is involved, but the tool itself is lawful.

Can I use a VPN to avoid UK age verification checks?

A VPN routes your connection through a server in another country, so sites that only apply UK age verification to UK visitors will typically not trigger those checks. This is one of the main reasons VPN signups surged in the UK after the Online Safety Act checks went live.

Which VPN works with BBC iPlayer?

In my tests, Surfshark, IPVanish, NordVPN, Proton VPN, VeePN, PrivadoVPN and ExpressVPN all unblocked BBC iPlayer. Surfshark and IPVanish were the most consistent, connecting first time on every attempt. Remember that BBC iPlayer requires a valid UK TV licence.

Do I need a VPN if I live in the UK?

It is worth serious consideration. UK ISPs are legally required to retain your browsing records for up to 12 months, age verification checks are collecting sensitive ID data, and a VPN also lets you access geo-blocked content from other countries and stay safe on public Wi-Fi.

Is there a good free VPN for the UK?

PrivadoVPN offers the best free plan I have tested, with 10 GB of monthly data and real server selection. Proton VPN’s free tier offers unlimited data but no server choice. Neither is reliable for UK streaming, so for BBC iPlayer or ITVX you will want a paid plan.

Will the UK ban VPNs?

There are no plans to ban VPNs in the UK. Future regulation is more likely to target the websites subject to age verification than VPN providers themselves, and VPN use remains legal and mainstream, including in businesses across the country.

What is the cheapest VPN for the UK?

PrivadoVPN is the cheapest premium VPN on my list at $1.11 a month with the current 90% discount, followed by VeePN at $1.99 and IPVanish at $2.19. All three unblocked the major UK streaming services in my testing.
