CyberGhost has a larger total server count — over 11,000 servers to NordVPN’s 9,300+. But raw numbers don’t tell the whole story here, and in several important ways, NordVPN’s network is more impressive.
NordVPN covers 130+ countries to CyberGhost’s 100. If geographic diversity is important to you — for bypassing restrictions or accessing specific regional content — NordVPN reaches more of the world. CyberGhost does note that some of its server locations are virtual, meaning the servers are physically located elsewhere but routed to appear in the target country. NordVPN uses only physical servers, which is a meaningful advantage for both speed and trust.
CyberGhost also refuses to publish its exact server count (when asked, their support team declined to specify). NordVPN is fully transparent: 9,300+ physical, colocated servers, many running on 10 Gbps infrastructure.

Both VPNs use AES-256 encryption and have passed leak tests — I didn’t find DNS, WebRTC, or IPv6 leaks with either service during testing. The core encryption is strong on both sides. But dig deeper and NordVPN pulls ahead significantly.
VPN Protocols
CyberGhost supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 — all solid, industry-standard choices. NordVPN goes further: NordLynx (its WireGuard-based proprietary protocol) consistently delivers faster speeds and lower latency; NordWhisper is a stealth protocol designed to bypass deep packet inspection and VPN blocks in restrictive countries; and it supports OpenVPN and IKEv2 as well. The NordWhisper protocol alone makes NordVPN the superior choice for anyone in China or other heavily censored regions.
Extra Security Features
NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro is a proper security layer — it blocks ads, trackers, malicious sites, and scans downloaded files for malware. In independent tests, it scored around 94/100 on ad-blocking benchmarks. CyberGhost’s Content Blocker works at the DNS level only and is limited to the WireGuard protocol; it scored around 72/100 in similar tests.
NordVPN also includes Double VPN (routing traffic through two servers with two encryption layers), Onion Over VPN, Meshnet (for secure device-to-device connections and remote access), and dark web monitoring. CyberGhost has none of these.

Privacy: The CyberGhost / Kape Technologies Problem
This is where I need to be direct about something the other reviews often gloss over.
CyberGhost is owned by Kape Technologies, a conglomerate that also owns ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), and a number of VPN review websites. Kape has a controversial history — the company was previously known as Crossrider, which was involved in distributing adware and potentially unwanted software. They’ve rebranded and pivoted to the privacy space, but that history doesn’t disappear.
Kape also owns VPN review websites, which creates an obvious conflict of interest when those sites rank Kape-owned VPNs at the top. I disclose this on my CyberGhost review and PIA review as well, because users deserve to know.
To CyberGhost’s credit, they’ve made real improvements: Deloitte audited their no-logs policy in 2024 and confirmed it, they publish regular transparency reports, and their RAM-only servers mean nothing is stored on disk. They’re based in Romania, which has no mandatory data retention laws and is outside Five Eyes/Nine Eyes/14 Eyes surveillance alliances.

Both VPNs are polished and easy to use, but they take different approaches to UI design.
NordVPN’s desktop app features an interactive world map you can click to connect, plus a left-side server list and quick-access specialty server categories. The mobile apps mirror the desktop feature set well, including the app-based kill switch and split tunneling on Android. There’s even an Apple TV app. The interface is clean, modern, and intuitive — though the sheer number of features can feel like a lot for first-time VPN users.
CyberGhost uses a simpler approach: a big connect button, a server list organized by use case (streaming, gaming, torrenting), and toggles for features. It’s arguably the more beginner-friendly of the two. The trade-off is that the full desktop app takes up considerable screen space when expanded, and some features are missing from mobile (no kill switch toggle on some mobile versions).
On Linux, NordVPN offers a proper dedicated app. CyberGhost’s Linux support is more limited and the documentation isn’t always up to date.
