Surfshark One
The best value VPN in 2026: unlimited devices, Antivirus, 4500+ servers, CleanWeb, Cybersecurity bundle, NoBorders, GPS override, Surfshark Everlink, fast servers in 100+ countries, and watertight privacy.
- Unlimited devices
- No-logs policy
- 100+ countries
- 24/7 support
As of October 2026, age verification laws for adult websites are active in 27 US states. West Virginia and Iowa joined the list in the summer of 2026, and Utah now expects adult sites to check ages even when visitors use a VPN.
If you live in Texas, Florida, Georgia or any other affected state, visiting Pornhub now means a block page or a request for a government ID or face scan. That is a lot of sensitive data to hand over just to browse a legal website.

I work full-time in cybersecurity and have published more than 600 VPN videos over 3+ years on my AllThingsVPN and VPNR channels. In this guide, I explain what these laws do, which states are affected right now, and how adults can protect their privacy without uploading personal documents.
How to watch porn without age verification in the US (quick steps)
1
Get a reliable VPN
Pick a trusted VPN with an audited no-logs policy and fast US servers. I recommend Surfshark One, my top pick for speed, value and privacy in 2026.
2
Install the VPN app
Download the app for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS or your browser. Every VPN I recommend installs in a couple of minutes.
3
Connect to a server in an unrestricted state
Choose a server in New York, California, Illinois, Washington or another state without an age verification law. Avoid server cities inside the 27 restricted states, such as Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix or Salt Lake City.
4
Open a private window and visit the site
Use a fresh private window so old cookies can’t reveal your real state. With the VPN active, the age gate should not appear, so no ID upload and no face scan.

1. Surfshark One: best overall and the fastest VPN I tested
Surfshark One is my top recommendation for getting past age verification in 2026. It kept about 96% of my base speed in testing, the best result of any VPN I’ve reviewed, so HD video loads without buffering.

Pornhub and other adult sites loaded without any age gate from Surfshark’s New York, Los Angeles and Chicago servers. The One plan also adds antivirus, data breach alerts and a private search tool, which is useful protection when you browse riskier corners of the web.
What I liked
- Fastest VPN in my tests, with about 96% speed retention
- Unlimited devices on one subscription
- Audited no-logs policy
- Antivirus and breach alerts included in Surfshark One
- Plenty of US cities in unrestricted states
What I didn’t like
- Smaller server count than NordVPN
- Renewal price is higher than the first-term deal
Right now Surfshark One costs $2.79/mo on the 2-year plan, with 85% off and 3 extra months free. For a full breakdown, read my Surfshark One review.

+ 3 months free included. Just $2.79/mo on the 2-year plan with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
2. IPVanish: unlimited devices, fast speeds and budget friendly
IPVanish is a great pick if you want to cover every device in your home. It kept about 93% of my base speed, second only to Surfshark, and adult sites loaded smoothly from its unrestricted US servers.

The current deal is 84% off at $2.39/mo on the 24-month Essential plan, plus a 3 GB eSIM data gift. See my IPVanish review for my full test results.
What I liked
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Owns and runs its server network
- Strong speeds, about 93% retention
What I didn’t like
- Based in the US, which privacy purists may dislike
- Fewer countries than Surfshark
Not sure which VPN fits you best?
Surfshark One is my top pick overall, but you can compare every VPN I've tested side by side in my full guide.
See all VPN comparisons →3. Proton VPN: best for privacy
If privacy is your main reason for avoiding ID checks, Proton VPN is the standout choice. It is run by a Swiss company, its apps are open source, and its no-logs policy has been independently audited.

It kept about 92% of my base speed, and the free plan has no data cap, although it limits your server choice. The paid deal is 70% off at $2.99/mo on the 2-year plan. More in my Proton VPN review.
What I liked
- Open-source apps and audited no-logs policy
- Swiss privacy laws
- Free plan with no data cap
What I didn’t like
- Free plan doesn’t let you pick a specific state
- Costs more than Surfshark One for fewer extras
4. PrivadoVPN: cheapest option and best free VPN
PrivadoVPN is the cheapest VPN I recommend at $1.11/mo on the 2-year plan, with 90% off and 3 months free. It is based in Iceland and follows a no-logs policy.

Its free plan gives you 10 GB of data per month, which is enough for light use. Speeds were a step behind the leaders at about 85% retention, but still fine for HD. Read my PrivadoVPN review for details.
What I liked
- Lowest price of any VPN on my list
- Usable free tier with 10 GB per month
- Iceland-based with a no-logs policy
What I didn’t like
- Free data cap runs out quickly with video
- Smaller server network than the top picks
5. NordVPN: one of the fastest, but pricier
NordVPN is one of the fastest VPNs on the market, and it handled adult sites without problems from unrestricted states. In my tests it kept about 91% of my base speed, which is good but still behind Surfshark’s 96%.

The current deal is 75% off plus 3 months free at $3.59/mo on the Plus plan. That makes it more expensive than Surfshark One while covering 10 devices instead of unlimited. My Surfshark vs NordVPN comparison goes deeper.
What I liked
- Fast and stable connections
- Audited no-logs policy
- Threat Protection blocks malicious sites
What I didn’t like
- Slower than Surfshark in my tests
- Pricier than Surfshark One
- 10-device limit
6. VeePN: budget streaming pick
VeePN is an affordable option at $1.99/mo on the 2-year plan, with 83% off and 4 extra months free. It kept about 88% of my base speed and unblocked adult sites from unrestricted US servers.

What I liked

- Servers in 60+ countries
- 10 devices per account
What I didn’t like
- Slower than the top picks
- Fewer advanced features than Surfshark
7. ExpressVPN: easiest to use
ExpressVPN has the simplest apps I’ve tested, which makes it a good fit for beginners. It kept about 91% of my base speed and connected to unrestricted states in seconds.

The deal is 78% off plus 4 months free at $2.79/mo on the 2-year plan, which covers 10 devices on the Basic tier. Note that ExpressVPN is owned by Kape Technologies, which also owns CyberGhost and PIA. More in my ExpressVPN review.

- Owned by Kape Technologies

US porn age verification laws explained (2026)
Age verification laws started with Louisiana in January 2023 and now cover 27 states. Most of them apply to websites where at least one third of the content is considered harmful to minors, and require those sites to confirm visitors are 18 or older.
The trend sped up after June 2025, when the US Supreme Court upheld Texas’ HB 1181 in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton. That ruling gave other states a green light, and West Virginia and Iowa added their own laws in 2026.

In practice, verification usually means one of these methods:
- Uploading a government-issued ID
- A third-party check against financial or public records
- A facial age estimation scan
- A state digital ID, such as LA Wallet in Louisiana

Utah’s VPN rule and other VPN crackdowns
Utah’s SB 73 took effect in May 2026. It says adult sites must age-check anyone physically located in Utah, even if that person connects through a VPN or proxy, and it bars those sites from posting instructions on using a VPN to skip age checks.
The law targets websites, not users, and it doesn’t ban VPNs. Aylo, Pornhub’s parent company, sued the state, and in September 2026 Utah agreed not to enforce the VPN rule against Aylo while the case continues.
Wisconsin tried to go further with a bill that would have forced adult sites to block VPN traffic. Lawmakers dropped that clause after heavy public pushback, and the bill never became law. Expect other states to test similar ideas, and I’ll keep this page updated as they do.
Why does Pornhub block access instead of verifying ages?
Pornhub and its sister sites, such as YouPorn and RedTube, block most restricted states rather than collect IDs. Their parent company Aylo argues that the laws don’t set adequate standards for protecting the personal data that verification collects.
From Aylo’s point of view, a breach at a third-party verifier could expose people’s identities and their viewing habits at the same time. It prefers to lose traffic rather than take that risk.
There are two exceptions right now. In Louisiana, Pornhub works through the state’s LA Wallet digital ID. In Ohio, Aylo reads the law differently and still serves the site, at least for now.
Other platforms have taken different routes. Some, such as xHamster and Chaturbate, run their own age checks in restricted states, while sites that ignore the laws risk heavy fines and lawsuits.
How a VPN bypasses age verification
A VPN routes your traffic through a server in another location before it reaches a website. Connect to a server in New York, and Pornhub sees a New York IP address, so it treats you as a New York visitor and shows no age gate.
A good VPN also encrypts your connection, so your internet provider can’t see which sites you visit. Incognito mode does nothing of the sort: it only clears local history, while your provider still sees everything.
The VPN itself still handles your traffic, so the provider you pick matters. Every VPN on my list follows a no-logs policy, and most of them have had that policy independently audited.
Want the fastest VPN for this?
Surfshark One kept about 96% of my base speed, the best result in all my tests, and covers unlimited devices.
Compare the best VPNs →How to unblock Pornhub with Surfshark: step-by-step
1
Sign up for Surfshark One
Head to Surfshark’s website and choose the Surfshark One 2-year plan. It costs $2.79/mo with 85% off and 3 extra months free, and includes antivirus and breach alerts.
2
Download and install the app
Surfshark has apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and Linux, plus Chrome and Firefox extensions. Download from the official site or your device’s app store.
3
Connect to an unrestricted US city
Search for a city such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago or Seattle and connect. For the best speed, choose the unrestricted state closest to where you actually are.
4
Block location access and clear cookies
Open a private window or clear your cookies, and deny any browser request for your location. This stops cached data or GPS from revealing your real state.
5
Visit your preferred adult site
Load the site as usual. If you still see a block page, switch to another server in a different unrestricted state and refresh.

Can I bypass age verification without a VPN?
Technically yes, but the alternatives come with real trade-offs.
Proxy servers
Proxies change your IP address like a VPN does, but they don’t encrypt your traffic. They are often slow, and many adult sites already block known proxy IPs. Free proxies are the worst option, since many log or sell your data.
Tor Browser
Tor sends your traffic through several volunteer-run nodes, which hides your IP. But you can’t easily choose the exit location, so you may land in a restricted state anyway. It is also far too slow for smooth video.
For reliable access with real privacy protection, a paid VPN is still the best tool. Surfshark One costs less than $3 a month on the 2-year plan, a small price for keeping your ID off third-party servers.
Is watching porn legal in the US?
Yes. Adult content is legal to view throughout the United States for people aged 18 and over. Age verification laws don’t make porn illegal; they set rules for how websites must check ages.
Using a VPN to visit legal websites is also legal. Businesses and individuals use VPNs every day for privacy and security, and connecting to one before visiting an adult site doesn’t break any law for adult users.
FAQ
Is watching porn illegal in the US?
No. Adult content is legal for people aged 18 and older. Age verification laws require websites to confirm visitors are adults, but they don’t make viewing porn a crime. Using a VPN to visit legal adult sites is also legal.
How many states have age verification laws in 2026?
As of October 2026, 27 states have active age verification laws for adult websites. The newest are West Virginia (June 2026) and Iowa (July 2026), and several more states are debating bills.
Why is Pornhub blocked in my state?
Pornhub blocks 25 of the 27 states with age verification laws instead of collecting ID data, arguing the laws create serious privacy risks. It still works in Louisiana through LA Wallet and in Ohio. A VPN server in an unrestricted state lets you access it without an ID upload.
Which VPN is best for bypassing the US porn ban?
Surfshark One is my top pick. It was the fastest VPN in my tests, supports unlimited devices and costs $2.79/mo on the 2-year plan. IPVanish is a strong runner-up, and Proton VPN is the best choice if privacy is your top priority.
Can I use a free VPN to access Pornhub?
You can, but most free VPNs have data caps, slow speeds and weak privacy, and some sell user data. PrivadoVPN is the exception, with 10 GB of free data per month. For regular video, a cheap paid plan is worth it.
Does Utah’s new law stop VPNs from working?
No. Utah’s SB 73 tells adult websites to age-check people physically in Utah even if they use a VPN, but it doesn’t ban VPNs or punish users. Utah has paused enforcement against Pornhub’s parent company while a lawsuit plays out.
Will a VPN completely hide my activity?
A VPN hides your browsing from your internet provider and encrypts your traffic, but it doesn’t make you fully anonymous. Your VPN provider could see your traffic in theory, which is why an audited no-logs policy matters. Proton VPN’s open-source apps make it the most verifiable option.
Which states should I connect my VPN to?
New York, California, Illinois, Washington, Colorado, Oregon and Nevada are all good choices with no age verification law. For the best speed, pick the unrestricted state closest to you.
Will more states pass age verification laws?
Very likely. Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota and Pennsylvania all had bills under discussion in 2026, and the 2025 Supreme Court ruling made these laws easier to pass. I update this page whenever the list changes.
