Since March 2026, Australians have been hitting block pages on major adult websites. Pornhub, YouPorn, RedTube and Tube8 restricted Australian IP addresses rather than comply with new age verification rules under the Online Safety Act 2021, and most are still blocked in October 2026.
Adult content is still legal for adults in Australia, so this isn’t a porn ban. The biggest platforms simply decided that blocking Australia was easier than building the new compliance systems.

Why is porn blocked in Australia in 2026?
This isn’t a government-issued nationwide porn ban. What happened is more nuanced, and it explains why a VPN fixes the problem.
The Online Safety Act 2021, enforced by the eSafety Commissioner, now requires adult platforms to use real age assurance for Australian users. A simple “I’m over 18” checkbox is no longer enough. Accepted methods include:
- Photo ID matching, sometimes with a selfie
- Facial age estimation
- Credit or debit card checks
- Digital identity wallets
The key date was March 9, 2026, when the second phase of Australia’s industry codes took effect. Platforms had to verify, restrict or block, and those that ignore the rules face penalties of up to A$49.5 million.
Aylo, which runs Pornhub, YouPorn, RedTube and Tube8, chose to block Australian IP addresses a few days before the deadline. Because that block is based on your IP, connecting through a server in another country gets around it.

Is it legal to use a VPN to watch porn in Australia?
Yes. VPNs are mainstream tools for businesses, remote workers, travellers and everyday users, and no Australian law prohibits them.
Adult content is also still legal for adults aged 18 and over. The 2026 rules target platforms and how they manage access, not adults watching legal content.
A VPN doesn’t override platform terms of service or make illegal content legal. It’s a privacy tool, not a legal exemption.
Why you shouldn’t use a free VPN for this
Free VPNs sound like an easy fix, but they’re one of the worst choices for this use case:
- Privacy: many free services log and sell your browsing data, which defeats the whole point.
- Reliability: capped data, overloaded servers and IPs that adult platforms already block.
- Security: some free apps have been linked to ad injection, weak encryption and even malware.

What about proxy servers and Tor?
Proxy servers reroute your connection like a VPN, but without encryption. Your ISP still sees your activity, many proxies are already blocked, and free ones often carry trackers or ad injection.
Tor is a serious anonymity tool, but it’s slow because it bounces traffic through several relays. Many adult sites block Tor exit nodes, and HD video is practically unwatchable.
A good paid VPN is faster than Tor, more private than a proxy and more reliable than either.
Tips for making your VPN setup work properly
- Site still blocked: old cookies or browser location permissions are usually to blame. Use a private window and deny location access.
- Slow speeds: switch to New Zealand, which is much faster from Australia than Europe or the US, and use WireGuard.
- VPN keeps dropping: turn on the kill switch so your Australian IP is never exposed mid-session.
- VPN IP blocked: some sites block known VPN IPs. Switch to another server in the same country.
