I have spent more than three years testing privacy tools across my two YouTube channels, and most of that time has gone into VPNs. So when the team behind Surfshark launched a family location-sharing app, I wanted to know one thing first: does it bring the same privacy thinking into a category that is famous for collecting a lot of data and keeping it for a long time?

HeyPolo Review

In this HeyPolo review I cover everything I found: how location sharing and the privacy controls work, the driving and crash detection features, what the privacy policy really says about data retention, how much it actually costs in USD, how it compares with Life360 and Apple Find My, and the honest limitations you should know before you pay.

My short answer: HeyPolo is one of the most balanced family locators I have looked at. It gives the person waiting at home real reassurance, and it gives the person being located a real off switch. It is not a parental control suite, the monthly plan is pricey, and some features have important limits. I explain all of that below.

What is HeyPolo?

HeyPolo is a location-sharing and family safety app for iPhone and Android. It combines live location sharing, arrival and departure notifications, driving insights, crash detection, SOS alerts and a set of privacy controls that I rarely see in this category. It launched on March 24, 2026, and it is positioned as a deliberate alternative to the always-on family trackers that most people already know.

HeyPolo

The app was developed by the team behind Surfshark, the VPN I rank as the best overall in my testing. HeyPolo operates as a separate product with its own development team. Its About page lists Edvinas Šeršniovas as CEO, Algirdas Dumskis as Engineering Manager, Šarūnas Šereika as Senior Product Manager and Sinead Lambert as CMO.

HeyPolo Review

HeyPolo often references Surfshark’s background: roughly 4 million users in more than 100 countries and over eight years of privacy experience. I want to be clear about this, because it is easy to misread. Those figures describe Surfshark, not HeyPolo. HeyPolo’s own public material does not publish an active-user count or a paying-subscriber count.

HeyPolo is a location and safety app, not a stealth parental control tool. There is no keylogging, no social media monitoring, no app or website blocking and no screen-time management. Every member knows they are sharing, and every member controls how much.

The problem HeyPolo is trying to fix

Most family trackers have two weak spots. The first is what I call forgotten sharing: someone turns on location sharing once and keeps broadcasting their position for months without thinking about it. HeyPolo answers that with timed sharing windows that end automatically.

HeyPolo Review

The second is the business model. Several free trackers have been criticised for sharing or selling movement data to advertisers, insurers or data brokers. HeyPolo uses a subscription-only model with no ads and a public promise that it never sells family location data to advertisers, insurers or data brokers. As someone who works in cybersecurity full time, that is the part I care about most, and I check it in detail in the privacy section below.

Who HeyPolo is for (and who should skip it)

After using it, I see HeyPolo as a strong fit for these groups:

  • Parents of teenagers who want arrival alerts when a teen gets to school or home, plus driving insights for a new driver.
  • Couples who want to follow a late commute or a long drive without texting every 20 minutes.
  • Adult children supporting older parents who live alone, especially with SOS, crash detection and low-battery alerts.
  • Friends coordinating a trip, a festival or a night out, thanks to timed sharing and the Live Compass.
  • Mixed iPhone and Android households, which Apple Find My does not cover cleanly.

It is a weak fit if you want app blocking, screen-time limits, social media monitoring or a free always-on tracker. It is also not the right tool for younger children, because HeyPolo’s terms require invited members to be at least 16. I cover that in detail in the age requirements section.

HeyPolo pricing in 2026 (USD)

HeyPolo sells one subscription with monthly or annual billing. There are no feature tiers. Every subscription includes location sharing, arrival alerts, SOS, crash detection, the Driving Safety Score, speeding and phone-use insights, Call Phone and support for both iPhone and Android. One subscription covers the creator and every person they invite, with no per-person fees.

HeyPolo pricing

The pricing is simple. There are only two plans, and the only real decision is whether you pay monthly or for a full year:

PlanMonthly priceBilledDiscount
12-month plan$3.99/mo$47.88 every 12 months67% OFF
1-month plan$11.99/mo$11.99 every monthNone

Twelve monthly payments at $11.99 add up to $143.88 a year. The 12-month plan costs $47.88, so you save $96 in the first year by paying annually. That is where the 67% discount comes from, and in my opinion it is the only plan that makes sense for a family that plans to use HeyPolo long term.

The monthly plan is useful if you only need HeyPolo for a short period, such as a summer trip or the first weeks after a teen gets their driving licence. For anything longer, the monthly price adds up fast.

Before you pay, check the final amount, taxes (VAT may apply in some countries), trial eligibility and the renewal price on the purchase screen. Prices bought inside the App Store or Google Play can differ slightly by country.

Is there a HeyPolo free plan?

Downloading HeyPolo is free, and invited members can join a subscriber’s group without buying their own subscription. But there is no permanent free subscription for the person creating the group. The terms require a paid subscription for group creation and full admin access. Marketing pages describe invited members as getting the features for free, while the terms describe their access as limited to the groups they have been invited into.

Some official blog posts mention a 3-day trial for monthly billing and a 7-day trial for annual billing, and one review notes trials are tied to App Store and Google Play purchases rather than the website. These trial offers are not stated consistently, so I treat them as purchase-specific. The 30-day money-back guarantee is the more reliable safety net. For the latest deal and how to claim it, see my HeyPolo coupon page.

How to set up HeyPolo

Setup is one of HeyPolo’s strongest points. I had my first group running in a few minutes, and the permission prompts are explained in plain language. Here is the process:

1

Download the app

Install HeyPolo from the Apple App Store or Google Play. On iPhone you need iOS 17.0 or later. The download is free.

2

Create your profile and subscribe

Create your account and start a subscription. For the best price, choose the 12-month plan through this HeyPolo deal, which gives you 67% OFF at $3.99/mo.

3

Grant the permissions

The app asks for location, background location, motion, notifications and battery optimisation access. Background location and motion are what make arrival alerts, driving insights and crash detection work.

4

Create a group and invite people

Groups are invite-only. Send a link or a short code to each person. You can create separate groups for family, friends or a trip, with no extra cost per member.

5

Set your sharing rules and places

Each member picks exact or general-area sharing per group, and you can save places like home, school or work for arrival and departure alerts.

Location sharing and privacy controls

This is where HeyPolo really separates itself from the usual family trackers. Control sits with the person being located, not only with the account holder. Every member chooses between three visibility levels:

ModeWhat others seeWhen I would use it
Exact locationA live pin on the mapLate commutes, solo trips, finding each other at an event
General areaAn approximate area, not a street addressDay-to-day family sharing when you do not need precision
Private ModeYou stay in the group, but your location is hiddenPersonal time, surprises, or simply a break from sharing

What I like is that these levels can be different for each group. You can share your exact position with your partner, a general area with your extended family and nothing at all with a friends group, all at the same time. The interface also shows who is currently able to view your location, which is something I wish more apps did.

HeyPolo Review

Timed sharing and schedules

You can set a sharing window that ends automatically. It can cover a single journey, an evening out or any other defined period. When the timer runs out, sharing stops without you having to remember to switch it off. There are also recurring schedules, for example sharing only during the school run on weekdays, plus open-ended sharing if a member prefers that. In my view this is the single best answer to forgotten sharing I have seen in a family locator.

Emergency sharing

Emergency sharing can give selected connections temporary access to your exact location, and the person sharing is notified when it happens. It is a sensible middle ground: a member can keep general-area sharing for everyday use and still be precisely findable in an emergency.

Update speed, accuracy and battery use

HeyPolo’s real-time feature page advertises location updates every five seconds while the app is open. The group-sharing page adds that updates happen every 30 seconds when the app is closed. The live map shows status labels such as Active, Arrived Home, In Private Mode and Left Work, and moving members can display their speed.

HeyPolo publishes a typical accuracy of around five metres and a battery impact of about 4% per day. ZDNET, which tested an early version against Life360 for a month, found HeyPolo the more accurate of the two. These are company-published estimates and third-party impressions, not guarantees for every phone, network or environment. In my use the map felt responsive, but your results will depend on GPS signal, phone model and battery-saving settings.

HeyPolo Review

Arrival and departure alerts

Place alerts notify you when a connection arrives at or leaves a saved location, such as home, school, work or a grandparent’s house. You pick the place, then choose whether the alert applies to one person or a whole group.

In practice this is the feature I would use most. An arrival alert confirms someone reached their destination. A departure alert tells you they have set off. Together they remove the need to keep opening the map, which is better for everyone’s peace of mind and, honestly, for family relationships.

HeyPolo Review

Location history and trip review

Location history records past routes, arrival and departure times, stops and trip summaries. Recent updates also added trip playback, so you can replay a route after the fact. History visibility follows each person’s sharing choices, so someone on general-area sharing does not suddenly expose precise routes in their history.

There is one inconsistency worth flagging. HeyPolo’s dedicated history page and its privacy policy (updated August 28, 2026) both specify 30 days, with automatic deletion after 30 days or earlier if consent is withdrawn. However, the general features page and some older pages, plus earlier reviews, still say seven days. My reading is that 30 days is the current retention window, and some public pages simply have not been updated.

Driving safety features

Driving tools were still in development when the first reviews came out. They are now live and, in my opinion, they are what turn HeyPolo from a simple map into a serious family safety app. Each recorded drive gets a score, there is a rolling weekly average, and a map shows exactly where driving events happened.

Driving behaviourWhat HeyPolo records
SpeedingCompares driving speed with the road’s speed limit
Phone useFlags when the phone is unlocked and used while the vehicle is moving
Harsh brakingRecords hard stopping events
Rapid accelerationIdentifies aggressive acceleration
Harsh corneringListed in the Driving Safety Score descriptions

September 2026 updates added weekly driving scores, member rankings and risky-driving event timelines. The point of these tools is not to catch anyone out. It is to help families talk about specific trips and see whether driving improves over time, which is exactly how I would use them with a new teen driver.

HeyPolo Review

One honest note: HeyPolo’s example screens show a driving score of 9.4. That is an interface illustration, not a published customer average, and it is not evidence that using HeyPolo reduces accidents. No independent data on that exists yet.

Crash detection

Crash detection uses the phone’s motion sensors to spot events like a hard impact, sudden deceleration or a rollover. When it detects a possible crash, it shows a check-in prompt and gives the driver 60 seconds to confirm they are okay. If there is no response, HeyPolo sends an alert with the driver’s live location to their groups and emergency contacts. False alarms can be cleared, and the feature runs automatically in the background.

HeyPolo’s terms state clearly that crash detection does not contact emergency responders or dispatch help. It notifies your personal connections only. It is not an emergency response service, so it should never replace calling emergency services yourself.

HeyPolo also does not publish an independently measured crash detection success rate. I treat the feature as a useful extra layer, not something to rely on alone.

SOS alerts

SOS sends an emergency notification with your exact live location. Marketing calls it one tap, but the real workflow is tap SOS, then slide to confirm. I actually prefer that, because it cuts down on accidental alerts from a phone in a pocket.

The confirmation screen shows who will receive the alert, and afterwards you can see who received it. An SOS always shares your exact location, even if you normally share only a general area, and the position keeps updating so recipients can find you and decide how to respond. It is a good fit for teens travelling alone, older parents and roadside breakdowns.

Severe-weather alerts

Severe-weather alerts notify your group when someone’s shared location falls inside an official warning area. HeyPolo uses warnings from US government weather agencies. It triggers on official Warnings only, not Watches or Advisories, and the company says alerts arrive within minutes of being issued. The affected area appears on the map, and the app keeps 30 days of alert history.

Because the documented warning sources are US-based, I would not assume weather alerts work outside the United States. Weather alerts are also disabled for anyone in Private Mode.

Call Phone, low-battery alerts and Live Compass

Three smaller features round out the package, and all three are genuinely useful:

  • Call Phone: reaches a group member even if their phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb. Handy when a teen has their phone muted at a friend’s house.
  • Low-battery alerts: tell the group when someone’s battery is running low, so silence is not automatically read as something worse.
  • Live Compass: shows an arrow pointing toward nearby connections, which is great for festivals, theme parks, crowded events and unfamiliar places.

HeyPolo Review

Privacy and data handling: my cybersecurity take

This is the section I spent the most time on, because a location app knows more about you than almost any other app on your phone.

What HeyPolo promises

HeyPolo says it never sells family location data to advertisers, insurers or data brokers, and it runs on subscriptions with no ads. Sharing is consent-based, and the sharer chooses accuracy, audience and duration. That combination is exactly what I want to see in this category.

What the privacy policy says about retention

The privacy policy describes the data processed to run the service, including account details, geolocation, trip information, driving metrics, payments and chat. Here is how long each type is kept:

Data typeRetention period
Trip and geolocation data30 days, or until consent is withdrawn, whichever comes first
Driving scores and safety events30 days
Some account and chat dataUp to 2 years after your last login
Payment recordsUp to 10 years

A 30-day window for location and driving data is short by industry standards, and I consider it a real strength. Payment record retention is typical, since companies usually need it for tax and accounting reasons.

The fine print you should know

Not selling location data does not mean HeyPolo uses no tracking technology at all. The website policy describes analytics and marketing cookies. Apple’s App Store privacy label, which is supplied by the developer and not verified by Apple, lists identifiers that may be used for tracking across other companies’ apps and websites. Some coverage also mentions an optional choice about aggregated data for analytics or marketing.

Encryption wording is also inconsistent across sources. The launch article and TechRadar describe location data as encrypted in transit, while PCMag and Android Authority describe end-to-end encryption. Those are very different promises. Encryption in transit protects data on its way to the server. End-to-end encryption means the company itself cannot read it. HeyPolo has not fully clarified this in public, and since the service stores 30 days of location history on its side, I would assume in-transit encryption until HeyPolo confirms otherwise.

My verdict on privacy: HeyPolo is clearly more privacy-conscious than the typical free family tracker. The no-sale pledge, short retention, general-area mode and timed sharing are all real advantages. I would still like a clear statement on encryption and an independent audit, the same standard I apply to VPNs.

Want to protect the whole family online too?

HeyPolo covers location and physical safety. For VPN, antivirus and data breach alerts, Surfshark One is my top pick. See how it compares with every VPN I have tested.

See the best VPNs of 2026 →

HeyPolo and Surfshark One: how they fit together

Since HeyPolo comes from the team behind Surfshark, a lot of my viewers ask whether they need both. They solve different problems, and in my opinion they work best together.

HeyPolo protects your family in the physical world: where people are, whether they arrived safely and how they drive. Surfshark One protects your family’s devices and data online. It bundles the fastest VPN in my tests, with around 96% speed retention, plus an antivirus, real-time data breach alerts and private search. It also allows unlimited devices, so one subscription covers every phone, tablet and laptop in the house, just like one HeyPolo subscription covers every family member.

HeyPolo is sold separately and is not part of the Surfshark One bundle. If you are building a family safety setup from scratch, though, the pairing makes a lot of sense: one app for location and one bundle for online security, both from the same privacy-focused team. You can read more in my Surfshark review and Surfshark Antivirus review.

HeyPolo vs Life360 vs Apple Find My

The three apps I get asked about most are HeyPolo, Life360 and Apple Find My. Here is how they compare on the things that matter for most families:

Starting price$3.99/mo on the 12-month planPaid tiers from around $7.99/moFree

Crash detectionYes (alerts contacts only)YesVia iPhone Crash Detection
Driving reportsYesYesNo

Roadside assistanceNoHigher tiersNo

HeyPolo vs Life360

The difference is as much philosophical as it is functional. Life360 is built around always-on circles, and while you can turn tracking off, the app flags that change to the group. HeyPolo lets each person schedule sharing, drop to a general area or go private. Life360 still wins on hardware support (Tile and pet trackers), roadside assistance on higher tiers and a usable free plan. HeyPolo wins on price for a whole family, consent-based controls and a privacy policy that is short enough to actually read. Life360’s paid plans start around $7.99 a month according to ZDNET, and TechRadar compared a Silver plan at about $9.99 a month, so HeyPolo is considerably cheaper for most families.

HeyPolo vs Apple Find My

Find My is free and solid if every person in your family uses Apple devices. The moment you have one Android phone in the group, it stops being a clean option. HeyPolo works the same way on both platforms and adds driving insights, SOS and place alerts for the whole group.

HeyPolo vs parental monitoring apps

Apps like mSpy are a completely different category, built around monitoring messages, apps and browsing. They also cost more (mSpy was cited at around $11.19 a month on an annual plan). If you want that level of control, HeyPolo is not for you, and that is by design.

Apps, platforms and recent updates

HeyPolo is available on iPhone and Android with feature parity. The US App Store listing shows a 176.5 MB app in the Lifestyle category, with English as its listed language and iOS 17.0 or later required. Google Play shows more than 50,000 downloads and an update dated September 25, 2026. That download figure is an Android install threshold, not a count of active users or paying households.

Development has been fast. Version 1.50.0 added Live Compass and improvements to permissions, trip previews and background performance. September releases added trip playback, weekly driving scores, member rankings and risky-driving event timelines.

There is no desktop app, no physical GPS tracker and no wearable option. HeyPolo is app-only, which matters if you were hoping to track a child who does not have a smartphone.

HeyPolo’s website advertises very high ratings on both app stores and a 90.7% recommendation rate from Mumsnet reviewers. The US Apple listing I checked showed a lower average based on only 96 ratings. Ratings change by country and over time, so I treat them as a positive signal rather than proof.

Age requirements

HeyPolo’s terms require the paying group creator to be at least 18 (or the local age of majority), and every invited member to be at least 16. That is stricter than the app store content ratings, and it means HeyPolo is not designed for tracking younger children.

For parents of 16 and 17 year olds, HeyPolo is an excellent fit, especially for new drivers. For parents of younger kids, you will need to look elsewhere.

Renewals, cancellation and refunds

Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel before the next billing period. If you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.

HeyPolo offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on the initial purchase, limited to one refund per service. Recurring payments are non-refundable, and the guarantee excludes users who already received a trial of 30 days or longer. If you bought through Apple, refunds go through Apple’s own process. For purchases made on the HeyPolo website or Google Play, HeyPolo says it can facilitate eligible refunds.

Customer support and account deletion

You can reach support by email at [email protected], through the HeyPolo Help Center, or via live chat with human agents from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time (GMT-5). There is no 24/7 chat, which is a downside if you are in Europe or Asia.

Deleting your account is simple: go to Settings, then Account, then Delete account. You can also ask support to delete it for you. I always check this before recommending an app, and HeyPolo passes.

HeyPolo pros and cons

What I liked

  • One subscription covers unlimited members and unlimited groups
  • Exact, general-area and Private Mode, set separately for each group
  • Timed sharing that switches off automatically
  • Arrival and departure alerts that cut down on constant map checking
  • Full driving toolkit with weekly scores and event maps
  • Crash detection, SOS, low-battery alerts and Call Phone
  • Public pledge never to sell location data, plus no ads
  • Short 30-day retention for location and driving data
  • Same features on iPhone and Android
  • Low price for a whole family on the 12-month plan

What I didn’t like

  • No permanent free plan for the group creator
  • Invited members must be at least 16
  • Crash detection does not contact emergency services
  • Monthly plan is pricey at $11.99/mo
  • Encryption wording (in transit vs end-to-end) not clearly stated
  • Severe-weather alerts appear limited to the US
  • No desktop app, GPS tracker or wearable
  • No app blocking or screen-time tools
  • Live chat only during US business hours

My verdict: is HeyPolo worth it?

Yes, for the right family. HeyPolo does the core job of a family locator very well: live location, arrival alerts, SOS, crash detection and driving insights, all for one low price that covers everyone. What makes it stand out is that it treats the person being located as a person, not a dot on a map. General-area sharing set per group, timed sessions, recurring schedules and Private Mode make consent the default instead of an afterthought.

It is not perfect. The monthly plan is expensive, the 16+ age rule rules out younger kids, crash detection only alerts your own contacts, and I would like clearer answers on encryption. But for parents of teens, couples, adult children watching out for older parents and mixed iPhone and Android households, HeyPolo is the family locator I would choose in 2026. At $3.99 a month on the 12-month plan with a 30-day money-back guarantee, there is very little risk in trying it.

HeyPolo FAQ

Is HeyPolo made by Surfshark?

HeyPolo was developed by the team behind Surfshark, but it operates as a separate product with its own development team and its own CEO, Edvinas Šeršniovas.

How much does HeyPolo cost?

There are two plans. The 12-month plan costs $3.99 a month ($47.88 billed yearly), which is 67% OFF. The 1-month plan costs $11.99, billed monthly. One subscription covers unlimited family members.

Is HeyPolo free?

The app is free to download, and invited members do not pay. The person who creates the group needs a paid subscription. There is no permanent free plan for group creators.

How many people can one HeyPolo subscription cover?

Unlimited. One subscription covers the creator and every person they invite, across unlimited groups, with no per-person fees.

Can someone see when I turn off location sharing?

You can switch to Private Mode, which keeps you in the group while hiding your location. You can also share only a general area or set a timer that ends sharing automatically.

Does HeyPolo crash detection call 911?

No. If you do not respond to the check-in within 60 seconds, HeyPolo alerts your groups and emergency contacts with your live location. It does not contact emergency responders or dispatch help.

How long does HeyPolo keep my location history?

The dedicated history page and the privacy policy specify 30 days, or less if you withdraw consent. Some older pages still mention seven days.

Does HeyPolo sell my location data?

HeyPolo says it never sells family location data to advertisers, insurers or data brokers, and it has no ads. Its website does use analytics and marketing cookies, so it is not completely tracking-free.

Can I use HeyPolo to track my young child?

Not under the current terms. Invited members must be at least 16, and the paying group creator must be at least 18 or the local age of majority.

Does HeyPolo work between iPhone and Android?

Yes. HeyPolo has the same features on both platforms, so mixed households can share in the same group without issues.

Does HeyPolo have a money-back guarantee?

Yes, a 30-day money-back guarantee on the initial purchase, limited to one refund per service. Apple purchases are refunded through Apple’s process.

Is HeyPolo a parental control app?

No. It is a location and safety app. It does not block apps, limit screen time, read messages or monitor social media.

The Review

HeyPolo Review

4.9 Score

I see HeyPolo as a promising choice for families who want location sharing without giving up control over their privacy. I like its flexible sharing settings, driving reports and safety alerts, along with an annual subscription that covers unlimited members and groups. However, the minimum age of 16 limits its usefulness for families with younger children. I’d also like clearer information about encryption, and I wouldn’t treat its crash alerts as a substitute for emergency assistance.

PROS

  • Flexible controls for sharing or hiding your location.
  • One subscription covers unlimited members and groups.
  • Works across iPhone and Android.
  • Includes SOS, crash detection and driving reports.
  • Ad-free, with a promise not to sell location data.
  • Annual billing offers better value than monthly billing.

CONS

  • Not available to children under 16.
  • No permanent free plan for group creators.
  • Crash alerts do not contact emergency services.
  • End-to-end encryption is not clearly confirmed.
  • No screen-time controls or app blocking.
  • Monthly billing is relatively expensive.
