⚡ QUICK VERDICT — NordVPN vs PIA
Best Overall: NordVPN
NordVPN logo

NordVPN — My top pick in this comparison

After running both VPNs through my full test circuit — speeds, streaming, privacy, and everyday usability — NordVPN comes out on top in most categories. It’s faster, unblocks more streaming services reliably, and sits in a far more privacy-friendly jurisdiction. PIA holds its own on price and device connections, but NordVPN delivers a more complete package.

  • ~89% speed retention — consistently fast across all servers I tested
  • Unblocked every streaming service I threw at it (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, and more)
  • Based in Panama — outside Five Eyes, no data retention laws
  • Advanced Threat Protection with pre-download malware scanning
  • NordLynx + NordWhisper protocols — fast and stealthy
  • 4 independent no-logs audits (Deloitte) — strong track record
  • More expensive than PIA — starts at $3.59/mo on the Plus plan
  • Only 10 simultaneous connections (PIA offers unlimited)

I’ve been testing VPNs for over two years and have published more than 500 VPN videos across my two YouTube channels. For this NordVPN vs PIA comparison, I ran both services through my full evaluation — speed tests across multiple server locations, streaming unblocking, leak tests, privacy analysis, and daily usability. Here’s what I actually found.

My review NordVPN review PIA review
My editorial ranking note: In my overall VPN rankings, Surfshark is my #1 recommendation for best overall value — it’s the fastest VPN I’ve tested (~95% speed retention) and the Surfshark One plan offers an exceptional price-to-quality ratio. NordVPN is one of the fastest VPNs available and earns a strong recommendation, especially if you need advanced security features or the best streaming unblocking performance. In this specific comparison article, NordVPN is the clear winner over PIA.

Speed Tests: NordVPN vs PIA

Speed is often the first thing people ask about, so I tested both VPNs across multiple server locations using the WireGuard/NordLynx protocol where available. My baseline connection was approximately 900 Mbps.

NordVPN retained around 89% of my baseline speeds consistently across US, UK, and European servers. The proprietary NordLynx protocol — built on WireGuard but optimized further — is a real differentiator here. I hit over 800 Mbps on US servers and above 650 Mbps connecting to the UK, which is genuinely impressive over that distance.

PIA retained around 85% of baseline speeds in my tests, which is still respectable. However, I found its performance more variable. US servers were reasonably fast, but international connections dropped more noticeably, and speeds were less predictable server to server. For everyday browsing, you won’t notice the difference — but for 4K streaming or large torrent downloads, NordVPN’s consistency gives it a meaningful edge.

Server Location NordVPN (NordLynx) PIA (WireGuard)
US (New York) ~825 Mbps ~500 Mbps
US (Los Angeles) ~869 Mbps ~263 Mbps
US (Seattle) ~903 Mbps ~299 Mbps
UK (London) ~658 Mbps ~261 Mbps
Speed retention (avg.) ~89% ~85%

Winner: NordVPN — faster and more consistent across every location I tested, by a significant margin in some cases.

Security: Which VPN Protects You Better?

Both NordVPN and PIA cover all the security essentials — AES-256 encryption, a working kill switch, DNS/IPv6 leak protection, and RAM-only servers. I ran both through leak tests using BrowserLeaks and neither VPN exposed my real IP or DNS during normal use or kill switch events.

But NordVPN has a few meaningful advantages:

  • Proprietary protocols: NordLynx (WireGuard-based, faster) and NordWhisper (stealth protocol for bypassing deep packet inspection). PIA relies on standard WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 — solid, but no custom protocol.
  • Threat Protection: NordVPN’s Threat Protection scans files before they’re downloaded for malware, blocks trackers and ads, and works even when you’re not connected to a VPN server. PIA’s MACE blocks ads and malicious domains at DNS level, but can’t pre-scan downloads and only works while connected.
  • Double VPN + Onion over VPN: NordVPN offers dedicated multi-hop servers and Onion over VPN as one-click options. PIA has these features too, but they require more manual configuration.
  • Obfuscated servers: NordVPN has obfuscated servers in 16+ countries plus the NordWhisper stealth protocol. PIA’s obfuscation is baked into its Multi-Hop feature via Shadowsocks — functional, but less polished.
Security Feature NordVPN PIA
Encryption AES-256 AES-256 (or AES-128 on default — change this)
Protocols NordLynx, OpenVPN, NordWhisper WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPsec
Kill switch App-level + system-wide 3-state (app + system)
Leak protection DNS + IPv6 (confirmed no leaks) DNS + IPv6 (confirmed no leaks)
RAM-only servers Yes Yes
Double VPN Yes (dedicated servers) Yes (via settings)
Obfuscation Yes (dedicated servers + NordWhisper) Yes (via Multi-Hop / Shadowsocks)
Malware protection Threat Protection — pre-download scanning MACE — DNS-level blocking only
No-logs audits 4 independent audits (Deloitte) 2 independent audits (Deloitte)
PIA encryption note: PIA’s default encryption setting uses AES-128-GCM with HMAC-SHA-1. SHA-1 is a 30-year-old hash function that has been phased out by federal agencies since 2010. While HMAC-SHA-1 is still considered technically secure, I recommend switching to PIA’s “Strong” setting (AES-256-GCM with HMAC-SHA-256) in the app settings.

Winner: NordVPN — more advanced malware protection, proprietary protocols, and a more polished implementation of advanced security features.

Privacy & Jurisdiction: A Critical Difference

This is where the gap between these two VPNs becomes most significant for privacy-conscious users.

NordVPN is based in Panama — a country with no mandatory data retention laws and no membership in any international surveillance alliances. The Panamanian government would need to go through Panamanian courts to request any data, and NordVPN would have nothing to hand over anyway thanks to its audited no-logs infrastructure.

PIA is based in the United States, which is a founding member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. This means US authorities can legally compel American companies to produce user data — and gag orders can prevent them from even disclosing this to users. PIA has proved its no-logs policy in court (twice, in 2016 and 2018, authorities subpoenaed PIA and found there was no data to provide), and its policy has since been audited by Deloitte. But the jurisdiction risk remains an inherent concern that Panama-based VPNs simply don’t carry.

It’s also worth noting that PIA is owned by Kape Technologies, a company with a controversial history (formerly Crossrider, a company associated with adware). Kape also owns CyberGhost and ExpressVPN. This doesn’t mean PIA is unsafe — its audited no-logs policy speaks for itself — but it’s context worth knowing.

NordVPN Privacy Strengths

  • Panama jurisdiction — outside all surveillance alliances
  • 4 independent no-logs audits by Deloitte (since 2018)
  • RAM-only servers — data wiped on every reboot
  • Optional cryptocurrency payments for anonymous sign-up
  • Dark Web Monitor for email breach alerts

PIA Privacy Concerns

  • US-based — Five Eyes jurisdiction, despite proven no-logs history
  • Owned by Kape Technologies (also owns CyberGhost and ExpressVPN)
  • Fewer independent audits (2 vs NordVPN’s 4)
  • Open-source apps are a plus, but jurisdiction risk remains

Winner: NordVPN — Panama jurisdiction, stronger audit track record, and no Kape ownership concerns.

Streaming: NordVPN vs PIA

I tested both VPNs against all major streaming platforms. The difference here was stark.

Streaming Service NordVPN PIA
Netflix (US) ✅ Works reliably ✅ Works, occasionally inconsistent
Netflix (UK, Japan, Canada) ✅ All regions unblocked ⚠️ Mixed — some regions fail
Amazon Prime Video ✅ Any region ❌ Often blocked
Disney+ ✅ Works reliably ⚠️ Intermittent — significant buffering
HBO Max ✅ No issues ❌ Typically fails
Hulu ✅ Every time ✅ Works with US servers
BBC iPlayer ✅ Fully works ✅ Works with UK servers
Peacock ✅ Full access ⚠️ Occasionally blocked
Paramount+ ✅ Accessible ❌ Usually inaccessible

NordVPN’s obfuscation and rotating IP system make it genuinely hard for streaming services to detect and block. During my tests, I hit zero failures across all major platforms. PIA does work with some services — Netflix US, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer were reliable — but it struggled with Prime Video, HBO Max, and Disney+ in international libraries.

If streaming is your primary use case, NordVPN is the clear choice here. For context, Surfshark also performs excellently for streaming and is worth considering at a lower price point.

Winner: NordVPN — unblocked every service I tested. PIA is hit-or-miss on the major platforms.

Torrenting: NordVPN vs PIA

Both VPNs fully support P2P file sharing, and I confirmed neither leaked my real IP during torrent sessions using DNS and WebRTC leak tests.

NordVPN routes P2P traffic to dedicated optimized servers automatically — you don’t need to think about it. Its Threat Protection pre-scans downloaded files for malware, which is a meaningful safety layer when torrenting (since torrent files can carry malicious payloads). Speeds over NordVPN during large downloads were consistently faster than PIA.

PIA supports torrenting on its entire server fleet — no specialized server selection required. It also supports port forwarding, which NordVPN doesn’t offer. Port forwarding is useful for improving seeding ratios and connecting to more peers. Both include a free SOCKS5 proxy for clients that support it.

For most users, NordVPN’s speed advantage and malware scanning tip the scales. But if you specifically need port forwarding, PIA is one of the few premium VPNs still offering it.

Winner: NordVPN (for most users) — faster downloads and pre-download malware scanning. PIA edges ahead only if port forwarding is a must for you.

Server Network: PIA vs NordVPN

PIA wins on raw server count — 35,000+ servers in 90+ countries vs NordVPN’s 9,300+ servers in 137+ countries. PIA’s fleet is genuinely the largest in the VPN industry.

That said, having more servers doesn’t automatically mean better performance. NordVPN covers more countries (137 vs 90), has rolled out colocated 10 Gbps hardware across its network, and offers more specialized server types:

  • Double VPN servers (traffic encrypted through two hops)
  • Onion over VPN servers (VPN + Tor combined)
  • Obfuscated servers (disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS)
  • P2P optimized servers
  • Dedicated IP servers

PIA has streaming-optimized servers and a dedicated IP option, but fewer specialty categories. Both VPNs run RAM-only server infrastructure.

Winner: PIA (on server volume) — the largest server network in the industry. But NordVPN covers more countries and offers more specialized server types.

Price Comparison: NordVPN vs PIA

Plan NordVPN PIA
1 month $12.99/mo $11.95/mo
1 year From $4.99/mo —
6 months — $7.50/mo
Best long-term plan $3.59/mo (2-year Plus plan, 76% OFF) $1.59/mo (3-year plan, 87% OFF)
Free trial 3 days (Android only) 30 days (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android)
Money-back guarantee 30 days 30 days

PIA is noticeably cheaper — especially on the 3-year plan at $1.59/mo. NordVPN’s Plus plan (which I recommend for its Threat Protection Pro and Dark Web Monitor) runs $3.59/mo on the 2-year deal. That’s more than double PIA’s price, but you’re getting a materially better service for streaming, speed, and privacy.

PIA also has a proper 30-day free trial — no credit card charge, just sign up and test it. NordVPN’s 3-day trial is Android-only, which is limiting. The 30-day money-back guarantee on both plans covers you either way.

If budget is the primary concern, PIA is a legitimate option. If you want the best overall VPN and can absorb the price difference, NordVPN is worth it. And if you want the best value-per-dollar VPN overall, my pick remains Surfshark — faster than both in my tests and priced very competitively.

Winner: PIA — significantly cheaper, especially long-term, and better free trial.

Device Connections: NordVPN vs PIA

PIA wins this one cleanly. Unlimited simultaneous connections vs NordVPN’s 10-device cap. For most individual users, 10 is plenty. But if you’re covering a whole household with multiple phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, and gaming consoles, PIA’s unlimited policy is a genuine advantage.

Both VPNs support Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, browser extensions, and smart TV platforms. NordVPN has a slight edge in app polish — its map-based interface is more intuitive for beginners, and features like the kill switch are enabled by default rather than requiring manual configuration.

Router tip: If NordVPN’s 10-device limit is a concern, you can install NordVPN directly on your router. Every device that connects to your Wi-Fi is then automatically protected under one device slot. NordVPN provides detailed setup guides for this on its website.

Winner: PIA — unlimited connections, no compromise.

Apps & Usability

NordVPN’s apps are more polished and beginner-friendly. The desktop app uses an interactive map for server selection, presets the kill switch and other important features by default, and makes it easy to switch between specialty servers. The mobile apps mirror the desktop experience well.

PIA’s apps are clean and functional but more minimal. The interface is list-based and gives you more manual control — better for experienced VPN users who want to dig into settings like encryption levels, split tunneling profiles, and port forwarding. Beginners may find it less intuitive.

Both VPNs offer browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. NordVPN also has an Edge extension. Neither had any bugs or crashes during my testing period.

Winner: NordVPN — more polished, more beginner-friendly, better default configuration.

Customer Support

Both NordVPN and PIA offer 24/7 live chat and email support, plus knowledge bases with guides and FAQs. In my experience, NordVPN’s support agents respond faster and resolve issues more effectively. PIA’s support is reliable but response times can be slower, and I found some of the troubleshooting suggestions less helpful.

NordVPN’s documentation is also more comprehensive — particularly its router setup guides, which are detailed and cover a wide range of router models.

Winner: NordVPN — faster, more knowledgeable support.

When Should You Choose PIA Over NordVPN?

PIA isn’t a bad VPN — it’s actually quite capable for the right user. I’d recommend PIA if:

  • You’re on a tight budget and $1.59/mo vs $3.59/mo is a meaningful difference for you
  • You need truly unlimited simultaneous device connections
  • You need port forwarding (PIA is one of the few major VPNs that still offers this)
  • You prefer open-source apps and want to inspect the code yourself
  • You don’t need to unblock multiple streaming platforms regularly
Also worth considering: If PIA’s price appeals to you but you want better streaming performance, PrivadoVPN is worth a look — it’s even cheaper at $1.11/mo and includes a solid free tier. IPVanish also offers unlimited connections at a competitive price with strong speeds.

Alternatives to NordVPN and PIA

Neither NordVPN nor PIA is the right fit for everyone. Here’s where I’d point you depending on your priority:

  • Best overall value: Surfshark — fastest VPN I’ve tested (~95% speed retention), Surfshark One plan at $1.99/mo, unlimited devices, and excellent streaming. My top overall pick.
  • Best for privacy: Proton VPN — based in Switzerland, open-source apps, strong privacy pedigree, and a genuinely free tier with no data cap.
  • Best budget option: PrivadoVPN — $1.11/mo on 2-year plan, best free VPN available, solid performance.
  • Easiest to use: ExpressVPN — polished apps, great support, but pricier. Note: ExpressVPN is also owned by Kape Technologies.
  • Best for streaming on a budget: VeePN — $1.99/mo, good streaming unblocking at a low price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NordVPN better than PIA overall?

In my testing, yes — NordVPN is the better VPN in most categories: speed, streaming, security, privacy, and usability. NordVPN retains ~89% of baseline speeds, unblocked every streaming service I tested, and sits in the privacy-friendly jurisdiction of Panama. PIA wins on price and unlimited device connections, but NordVPN delivers a more complete and reliable service.

Is PIA safe to use despite being US-based?

PIA has proven its no-logs policy in two real-world court cases — in both instances, authorities subpoenaed PIA and found there were no logs to provide. Its policy has also been independently audited by Deloitte. However, US jurisdiction under the Five Eyes alliance remains an inherent structural risk that Panama-based VPNs like NordVPN simply don’t share. If maximum privacy is your goal, NordVPN or Proton VPN are safer choices jurisdictionally. PIA also now belongs to Kape Technologies, which is worth knowing.

Can PIA unblock Netflix?

PIA can unblock Netflix US and UK reliably in my tests, and some other libraries occasionally. However, it struggled to unblock Netflix Japan, Hong Kong, and some other international libraries consistently. NordVPN unblocked every Netflix region I tested without issue. If Netflix access across multiple international libraries is important to you, NordVPN is the more reliable choice.

Which is cheaper — NordVPN or PIA?

PIA is noticeably cheaper. On the best long-term plans, PIA costs $1.59/mo (3-year plan, 87% off) vs NordVPN’s $3.59/mo (2-year Plus plan, 76% off). PIA also has a proper 30-day free trial across all major platforms, while NordVPN’s free trial is limited to 3 days on Android. Both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. If budget is your primary concern, PIA is the better value — though you get significantly more for your money with NordVPN.

Does NordVPN allow unlimited device connections?

No — NordVPN limits you to 10 simultaneous connections. PIA offers unlimited connections, which is a real advantage for larger households. One workaround: install NordVPN on your router, which counts as a single connection but protects every device on your network automatically. NordVPN provides detailed router setup guides on its website.

Which VPN is better for torrenting — NordVPN or PIA?

For most users, NordVPN is better for torrenting — it’s faster and its Threat Protection scans downloaded files for malware before they land on your device. Both VPNs are P2P-friendly and I found no DNS leaks with either during torrent sessions. The one exception: if you specifically need port forwarding to improve seeding or connect behind a firewall, PIA is one of the only major VPNs that still offers this feature.

Is Surfshark better than both NordVPN and PIA?

In my overall rankings, Surfshark is my #1 recommendation for best overall value. It’s the fastest VPN I’ve tested (~95% speed retention — faster than NordVPN’s ~89% in my head-to-head tests), offers unlimited device connections, and is priced at $1.99/mo on the Surfshark One plan. If you want the best combination of speed, price, and features, Surfshark is worth a serious look before committing to either NordVPN or PIA.

How does NordVPN’s Threat Protection compare to PIA’s MACE?

NordVPN’s Threat Protection is more capable. It blocks ads, trackers, and malicious domains like MACE does, but it also scans files before you download them to detect malware — and it works even when you’re not connected to a VPN server. PIA’s MACE is DNS-level blocking only, requires an active VPN connection, and cannot pre-scan downloads. For day-to-day malware protection, Threat Protection is meaningfully stronger.
