As of 2026, age verification laws for adult websites are now active in 25 US states — and the list keeps growing. If you live in Texas, Florida, Georgia, or any of the other affected states, visiting Pornhub or similar platforms may now require you to upload a government-issued ID or submit to a facial scan.
I’ve been testing VPNs for over two years and have covered this topic extensively on my AllThingsVPN and VPNR channels. In this guide, I’ll explain exactly what these laws mean, which states are affected, and — most importantly — how adults can protect their privacy and access adult content without handing over sensitive personal documents.
How to watch porn without age verification in the US (Quick steps)
1
Get a reliable VPN
Sign up for a trusted VPN with a no-logs policy and fast servers. I recommend Surfshark — it’s my top pick for value and privacy in 2026.
2
Download and install the VPN app
Get the app for your device — Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS. All the VPNs I recommend have easy one-tap installs.
3
Connect to a server with no age verification
Pick a server in a state like New York, California, or Nevada — or connect to a country like Canada or Germany. Avoid servers in the 25 states with active laws.
4
Visit your favorite adult site privately
Open Pornhub or any other adult platform. With your VPN active, you’ll bypass the age gate entirely — no ID upload, no face scan, no sensitive data shared.
Best VPNs to bypass age verification on porn sites in 2026
I’ve personally tested all of these VPNs for unblocking adult content in restricted US states. Here’s what I recommend:
Best Overall Value

Surfshark — My #1 pick
Surfshark is my top recommendation for bypassing age verification in 2026. The Surfshark One plan adds antivirus, data breach alerts, and a private search engine on top of an already excellent VPN — all at a price that’s genuinely hard to beat. In my testing, it unblocked Pornhub and other adult sites without any hiccups from servers in New York and California.
- Unlimited simultaneous connections — use it on every device
- Surfshark One adds antivirus and data breach monitoring
- Audited no-logs policy — your browsing stays private
- Fast, consistent speeds for HD video streaming
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- Slightly fewer servers than NordVPN
Best for Unlimited Devices

IPVanish — Unlimited devices, great speeds
IPVanish is an excellent pick if you want to protect every device in your household. I had no issues accessing adult sites in states with age verification laws during my testing, and speeds were more than adequate for streaming HD content.
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Owned and operated server network (no third parties)
- No-logs policy — independently verified
- Fewer international server locations than Surfshark or NordVPN
Best for Privacy

Proton VPN — Maximum privacy, open-source
If privacy is your primary concern when bypassing age verification, Proton VPN is the standout choice. Based in Switzerland with open-source apps and a strict no-logs policy proven in court, it’s the most transparent VPN I’ve reviewed. It also has a genuinely usable free tier.
- Swiss-based, outside US/EU jurisdiction
- Open-source and independently audited
- No-logs policy proven in real legal cases
- Free tier available (with limited servers)
- More expensive than Surfshark on longer plans
Fastest Speeds

NordVPN — Lightning-fast and reliable
NordVPN is one of the fastest VPNs I’ve tested, making it a great option if buffering drives you mad. It’s also excellent at bypassing geo-restrictions and age gates on adult sites.
- Consistently the fastest VPN in my speed tests
- 6,000+ servers in 60+ countries
- Audited no-logs policy
- Slightly pricier than Surfshark for equivalent features
- Only 6 simultaneous connections on standard plan
Best Free Option

PrivadoVPN — Best free VPN for this use case
PrivadoVPN offers the most generous free plan I’ve tested — 10GB of data per month with access to servers in 10+ locations, including several US states without age verification. For light users, this could be all you need.
- Genuinely useful free tier (10GB/month)
- Cheapest paid plan of any VPN I recommend
- Zero-logs policy
- Free tier data cap limits heavy streaming

US porn age verification laws explained (2026)
Age verification laws in the US have expanded rapidly. What started with a handful of Southern states in 2022–2023 now covers 25 states as of early 2026. The core idea behind these laws is straightforward: any website where at least one-third of content is deemed harmful to minors must verify that visitors are 18 or older before granting access.

In practice, that usually means one of the following: uploading a government-issued ID, completing a third-party verification check, or — in some states like Florida and Virginia — submitting to a facial recognition scan. The burden technically falls on the websites rather than users, but the result is the same: you can’t access the content without handing over sensitive personal data.

Why does Pornhub block access instead of verifying ages?
This is one of the most common questions I get. The short answer: Pornhub (and sister sites like RedTube and YouPorn) decided it’s safer for their users — and less legally risky for themselves — to simply block access in states with age verification laws rather than comply with them.
Their reasoning is that the current laws don’t provide adequate standards for securing the personal data collected during verification. If a third-party age verifier suffers a breach, that data could expose users’ identities and their browsing habits simultaneously — a major privacy catastrophe. From Pornhub’s perspective, it’s better to lose traffic than to put their users at that kind of risk.
Some other platforms have taken different approaches. Chaturbate and xHamster have implemented age checks in several states. SpankBang moved to an account-based verification system using AI — no ID required, but you do need to create an account. Sites that outright refuse to comply risk heavy fines and lawsuits.
How a VPN bypasses age verification
A VPN works by routing your internet traffic through a server in a different location before it reaches its destination. When you connect to a VPN server in New York (a state with no age verification requirement), any website you visit sees that server’s IP address — not yours. As far as Pornhub is concerned, you’re browsing from New York, so no age gate appears.
At the same time, a good VPN encrypts your connection, which means your internet service provider can’t see what sites you’re visiting. No browsing history is logged on the VPN’s end (assuming you use a provider with an audited no-logs policy, which all my recommendations have). That’s a significant privacy upgrade over just using incognito mode, which does nothing to hide your activity from your ISP.
How to unblock Pornhub with Surfshark: step-by-step
1
Sign up for Surfshark
Head to Surfshark’s website and pick the Surfshark One plan. It includes the VPN plus antivirus, a data breach scanner, and a private search tool. Currently discounted heavily on the 2-year plan.
2
Download and install the app
Surfshark has apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and even browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Download directly from the official site or your device’s app store.
3
Connect to a server in an unrestricted state
Open the app, search for a US location like New York, California, or Nevada, and connect. For best speeds, pick a server geographically close to you. You can also connect to a server in Canada or Germany if you prefer to go outside the US entirely.
4
Clear cookies and open an incognito window
Before visiting Pornhub, clear your browser cookies or open a new private/incognito window. This prevents any cached location data from revealing your real state.
5
Visit Pornhub or your preferred adult site
Navigate to the site as usual. With Surfshark connected to an unrestricted server, the age gate won’t appear — you’ll have full access without uploading any ID.
Can I bypass age verification without a VPN?
Technically, yes — but the alternatives come with significant trade-offs.
Proxy servers work similarly to VPNs by routing your traffic through a different IP address. But they don’t encrypt your connection, they’re often slower and less reliable, and many adult sites now detect and block common proxy IPs. Free proxies in particular are a bad idea — they often harvest your data or expose you to malware.
Tor Browser can help in some cases. It bounces your traffic through multiple volunteer-run nodes, which can make it hard to trace. However, whether you can access a blocked site depends entirely on the exit node you’re assigned — if it’s in a restricted state, the site will still be blocked. Tor is also significantly slower than a VPN, which makes streaming a poor experience.
For reliable, consistent access with proper privacy protection, a paid VPN remains the best solution. Surfshark costs a few dollars a month on a long-term plan, which is a small price for meaningful privacy.
Is watching porn legal in the US?
Yes. Adult content is legal to produce, distribute, and view throughout the United States for people 18 and older. These age verification laws don’t make porn illegal — they impose requirements on how websites must verify user ages before granting access. The porn itself remains fully legal.
Likewise, using a VPN to access legal content is legal in the US. VPNs are widely used by businesses and individuals for legitimate privacy reasons, and nothing about using one to visit an adult site crosses any legal line.
Is watching porn illegal in the US?
No. Adult content is legal in the US for people aged 18 and older. Age verification laws don’t criminalize viewing porn — they simply require websites to confirm users are adults before granting access. Using a VPN to access legal adult content is also legal.
How many states have age verification laws in 2026?
As of February 2026, 25 states have active age verification laws for adult websites. The most recent additions are Arizona (September 2025), Ohio (September 2025), and Missouri (November 2025). More states are expected to follow in 2026.
Why is Pornhub blocked in my state?
Pornhub has chosen to block access in all 25 states with age verification laws rather than comply with those laws. They argue that the current verification systems pose unacceptable privacy risks to users. A VPN lets you connect from a state where the laws don’t apply, bypassing the block entirely.
Which VPN is best for bypassing the US porn ban?
Surfshark is my top pick for most people. It’s affordable, supports unlimited simultaneous connections, and reliably unblocks Pornhub from any restricted state. For privacy purists, Proton VPN is the strongest choice. For raw speed, NordVPN leads. See the comparison table above for a full breakdown.
Can I use a free VPN to access Pornhub?
You can try, but I don’t recommend it. Free VPNs typically have data caps, slower speeds, fewer server options, and weaker privacy protections — some even sell user data. PrivadoVPN is the exception: its free tier offers 10GB/month and is one of the most legitimate free VPN options available. For regular streaming, a paid plan is worth it.
Will a VPN completely hide my activity?
A VPN hides your browsing from your ISP and encrypts your traffic, which provides strong privacy. However, it doesn’t make you 100% anonymous — your VPN provider could theoretically see your activity, which is why using one with an audited no-logs policy (like all the VPNs I recommend) matters. For the strongest privacy, Proton VPN’s Swiss jurisdiction and open-source code make it the most verifiable option.
What states can I connect my VPN to for unrestricted access?
Good options include New York, California, Nevada, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, and Oregon — all have no age verification requirements. For best speeds, choose a server in the closest unrestricted state to your actual location. You can also connect to a server in Canada or Germany if you prefer to exit the US entirely.
Is age verification coming to more states in 2026?
Almost certainly yes. Several additional states have bills in progress, and the political momentum behind age verification legislation has been strong. I’ll keep this page updated as new laws take effect. Check back for the latest state-by-state status.
