Surfshark vs NordVPN in 2026: Which VPN is Best for You?

Alfredo Vilar by Alfredo Vilar

in Comparisons
Surfshark vs NordVPN
Heads up on ownership: Surfshark and NordVPN merged under the Nord Security holding group in February 2022. Both brands continue to operate independently with separate apps, infrastructure, and pricing. I treat them as separate products in this comparison — because in practice, they are.

I’ve tested both of these VPNs extensively — speed tests, streaming tests, leak tests, the works. And the honest answer to “which is better?” is: it depends what you’re paying for.

In my testing, Surfshark is the better overall pick for most people.

It’s significantly cheaper on long-term plans, allows unlimited simultaneous connections, and delivers speeds that are more than good enough for streaming, gaming, and daily use.

NordVPN is a genuinely excellent VPN — faster in some head-to-head tests, with a larger server network and a more privacy-friendly jurisdiction — but you pay more for those advantages. For most households, Surfshark gives you 90% of the performance at 60% of the price.

Let me walk you through every category so you can decide for yourself.

Pricing — Surfshark wins, and it’s not close

This is where Surfshark separates itself most clearly. On a 2-year plan, Surfshark costs $1.99/month. NordVPN’s equivalent starts at $2.69–$3.09/month depending on the plan tier you choose. That’s a meaningful gap when you’re committing to two years.

Plan Surfshark NordVPN
1 month $15.45/mo $12.99/mo ✅
1 year $3.19/mo ✅ $4.29–$4.99/mo
2 years $1.99/mo ✅ $2.69–$3.09/mo

Surfshark pricing

The one exception: if you only want a monthly subscription, NordVPN is actually cheaper ($12.99 vs $15.45). So if you’re just testing things out short-term, NordVPN won’t break the bank either. Both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try either risk-free.

NordVPN Pricing

Both accept credit/debit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, and cryptocurrency. NordVPN has the edge on payment anonymity — it accepts cash payments at select retail stores like Walmart and Best Buy, which Surfshark doesn’t offer.

Winner: Surfshark — meaningfully cheaper on every long-term plan, with unlimited devices included at no extra cost.

Speed — NordVPN is faster, but both are more than fast enough

I ran speed tests on both VPNs using a baseline. Here’s what I found:

Server location NordVPN download Surfshark download
Local 912 Mbps (97%) 904 Mbps (96%)
London, UK 853 Mbps (91%) 846 Mbps (90%)
New York, US 823 Mbps (88%) 790 Mbps (84%)
Perth, Australia 633 Mbps (67%) ✅ 465 Mbps (50%)
Tokyo, Japan 586 Mbps (62%) 616 Mbps (66%) ✅

On download speeds, the two are very close for most people — local and nearby servers are near-identical. NordVPN pulls ahead meaningfully on distant servers like Australia, while Surfshark edges it on Japan for download. Where NordVPN really separates itself is upload speed: it retained around 69% of upload speeds across locations, while Surfshark averaged just 26%. If you’re doing large file transfers, video calls, or cloud uploads, that gap matters.

Surfshark Speedtest in a 500Mbps connection

For everyday use — streaming 4K, gaming, browsing — Surfshark is absolutely fast enough. I didn’t notice any buffering or lag in my testing. But if raw performance is your priority, NordVPN wins this category.

Protocol note: NordVPN uses NordLynx (a hardened WireGuard implementation) for its fastest speeds. Surfshark uses standard WireGuard. Both are dramatically faster than OpenVPN — always use WireGuard or NordLynx unless you have a specific reason not to.

Winner: NordVPN — faster upload speeds and more consistent performance on distant servers. That said, Surfshark is still one of the fastest VPNs available.

Streaming — both are excellent, NordVPN edges it

I tested both against the major platforms:

Platform Surfshark NordVPN
Netflix ✅ ✅
Amazon Prime Video ✅ ✅
Disney+ ✅ ✅
BBC iPlayer ✅ ✅
Hulu ✅ ✅
HBO Max ✅ ✅
Apple TV+ ✅ ✅
YouTube TV ✅ ✅

In practice, both unblocked everything I tested. The occasional need to switch servers is normal with any VPN — streaming platforms are constantly updating their VPN detection, so no provider can guarantee 100% uptime on every library.

Where NordVPN has a small advantage is SmartPlay — it’s built into every NordVPN connection automatically and optimizes DNS for streaming without any extra configuration. Surfshark has Smart DNS too, but SmartPlay is more seamless in my experience. NordVPN’s larger server network also means more options when one server gets blocked.

Surfshark’s Clean Web ad blocker is a genuine perk for in-browser streaming — it strips out pre-roll ads on YouTube and video sites, which NordVPN’s basic Clean Web equivalent doesn’t do as broadly (Threat Protection Pro does, but it requires a higher-tier plan).

Winner: Slight edge to NordVPN for SmartPlay consistency and server depth — but Surfshark is not far behind.

Security and privacy — NordVPN has the jurisdiction edge

Both VPNs use AES-256-GCM and ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption — the same ciphers used in TLS 1.3. Both implement Perfect Forward Secrecy. Both have RAM-only servers that wipe all data on reboot. At the encryption level, these two are essentially identical.

The key difference is jurisdiction. NordVPN is based in Panama — outside the Five, Nine, and Fourteen Eyes alliances, and with no mandatory data retention laws. Surfshark is based in the Netherlands, which is a Nine Eyes member. In practice, Surfshark’s own privacy policy is strong and has been audited — no VPN provider operating in the Netherlands is legally required to log user data. But if you want the cleanest possible jurisdictional picture, NordVPN wins.

Both have passed independent no-logs audits by Deloitte in 2025. NordVPN has the longer audit history — PwC verified it in 2018 and 2020, Deloitte in 2023 and 2025. Surfshark’s history is more recent (Cure53 infrastructure audits in 2018 and 2021, Deloitte in 2023 and 2025), but both are current and credible.

NordVPN review

Surfshark privacy strengths

  • RAM-only servers, no long-term data storage
  • Deloitte no-logs audit (2025)
  • Multi Hop with customizable entry/exit points
  • Alternative ID to protect real-world identity online
  • No Borders mode for censored regions

NordVPN privacy strengths

  • Panama jurisdiction — outside all surveillance alliances
  • Longer, more consistent audit history (since 2018)
  • Onion over VPN for Tor-level anonymity
  • App-level kill switch (not just system-wide)
  • NordLynx’s double-NAT system adds IP leak protection

Winner: NordVPN — Panama jurisdiction and a longer audit track record give it the edge for privacy-focused users.

Features — Surfshark has more unique tools

This one surprised me a little. NordVPN is often positioned as the premium product, but Surfshark actually packs in more unique features — especially for privacy and identity protection.

Surfshark-exclusive features

Alternative ID generates a completely fake online identity — name, email address, and with the paid add-on, a virtual phone number too. I use this regularly for sign-ups and newsletter paywalls. NordVPN has nothing equivalent. It’s included on all Surfshark plans.

GPS Override (Android) lets you spoof your device’s GPS location independently of your VPN server. Useful for location-based games and apps. NordVPN doesn’t have this.

Rotating IP changes your IP address every 5–10 minutes without dropping your connection or changing your server. Good for privacy-sensitive browsing; less useful for streaming (platforms may flag it).

Multi Hop (customizable) — Surfshark’s double VPN lets you choose your entry and exit server manually. NordVPN’s Double VPN uses pre-configured pairs only. For maximum routing flexibility, Surfshark wins.

Surfshark vs NordVPN

NordVPN-exclusive features

Meshnet links multiple devices into a private encrypted network — useful for remote LAN gaming or secure file sharing between your own devices. It’s free even without a NordVPN subscription.

Onion over VPN routes traffic through the Tor network. In practice it’s very slow, but it exists for journalists and activists in high-censorship regions who need maximum anonymity.

Threat Protection Pro is NordVPN’s most advanced security suite — it blocks ads, scans downloads for malware, and flags vulnerable apps. It’s genuinely impressive, though it’s only available on Plus-tier plans and above.

App-level kill switch — NordVPN lets you block specific apps from accessing the internet if the VPN drops, rather than cutting all traffic. More surgical than Surfshark’s system-wide approach.

On ad blockers: Surfshark’s Clean Web is included on every plan. NordVPN’s basic Threat Protection Lite (the version bundled in the cheapest plan) is less capable — you need Threat Protection Pro (Plus plan or above) for the full feature set. For most users, Clean Web is perfectly solid.

Winner: Surfshark — the Alternative ID, GPS override, customizable Multi Hop, and rotating IP give it a more distinctive feature set for privacy-conscious everyday users.

Server network — NordVPN is larger, Surfshark is plenty big enough

NordVPN runs 9,300+ servers across 130+ countries. Surfshark has 4,500+ servers in 100 countries. NordVPN’s network is roughly double the size.

In practice, this matters most when servers get congested or when specific regional servers get blocked by streaming platforms. More servers means more fallback options. For most users in well-covered regions (North America, Europe, major Asia-Pacific cities), you’ll never notice the difference.

Both offer specialty server types: obfuscated servers for censored regions, P2P-optimised servers for torrenting, and double-VPN configurations. NordVPN additionally offers Onion over VPN servers. Both have 10Gbps servers in select locations, and Surfshark has even announced 100Gbps infrastructure in the Netherlands.

Winner: NordVPN — larger network, more countries, more specialty options. But Surfshark’s coverage is broad enough for the vast majority of users.

Simultaneous connections — Surfshark wins by default

Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections. NordVPN caps you at 10 devices. For a single person, 10 is probably fine. For a family, or anyone who wants to share their subscription, Surfshark is the obvious choice.

This is one of those features that looks like a technical detail but has real practical impact. One Surfshark subscription can cover your phone, laptop, tablet, smart TV, partner’s devices, and your kids’ devices — all at once. With NordVPN, you’d either need to be selective or set up a router-level VPN to cover more devices (which requires more technical effort).

Winner: Surfshark — unlimited is unlimited.

Customer support — effectively a draw

Both offer 24/7 live chat, email support, and extensive knowledge bases. In my experience contacting both, response times were under a minute and agents were knowledgeable.

Surfshark’s agents tend to be friendlier and more conversational in tone. NordVPN’s responses are a bit more structured and technical — which I actually prefer when I have a specific troubleshooting issue. The knowledge bases are both thorough; NordVPN’s includes some interactive troubleshooting tools that Surfshark’s more traditional FAQ format doesn’t.

Neither offers phone support. For complex issues, both escalate to a ticket system with email follow-up, typically resolved within a few hours.

Winner: Draw — you’ll be well looked after with either.

My verdict: which should you choose?

Choose Surfshark if: you want the best value for money, you have multiple devices or want to share with family, you want unique privacy tools like Alternative ID, or you’re budget-conscious and don’t need the absolute fastest upload speeds.
Choose NordVPN if: you prioritise raw speed (especially upload), you want Panama jurisdiction, you care about the longest audit track record, or you need Meshnet or Onion over VPN.

For most people reading this, Surfshark is the right call. The price difference across a 2-year plan is real money. The unlimited device connections are genuinely useful. The streaming and speed performance are both excellent. The only people I’d steer towards NordVPN are power users with specific needs: high-volume file transfers (upload speed matters), journalists or activists who need Panama jurisdiction, or users who specifically want Meshnet or Tor integration.

Surfshark vs NordVPN

Frequently asked questions

Is Surfshark or NordVPN better for Netflix?

Both unblocked Netflix in my testing, including multiple regional libraries. NordVPN’s SmartPlay gives it a slight edge for automatic optimisation, and its larger server network provides more fallback options when a server gets blocked. That said, Surfshark worked reliably in my tests and is perfectly capable for the majority of Netflix use cases.

Are Surfshark and NordVPN owned by the same company?

Yes — both brands merged under the Nord Security holding group in February 2022. However, they continue to operate as completely separate products with independent apps, servers, pricing, and development teams. I tested them independently and treat them as separate products in this comparison.

Which is faster — Surfshark or NordVPN?

NordVPN is faster in head-to-head testing, primarily due to its NordLynx protocol and larger server infrastructure. It retains better upload speeds especially on distant servers (69% average vs Surfshark’s 26%). Download speeds are close on nearby servers. For streaming and casual use, Surfshark is fast enough — but for high-bandwidth uploads or gaming on distant servers, NordVPN has the edge.

Can I use Surfshark or NordVPN in China?

Both offer obfuscation tools — Surfshark has No Borders mode, NordVPN has obfuscated servers. Neither can guarantee access in China, as the Great Firewall is constantly updated. In practice, results vary and may require additional configuration. Neither company officially recommends their services for circumventing censorship in China.

Is Surfshark’s Netherlands jurisdiction a problem for privacy?

It’s worth being aware of, but in practice it’s unlikely to affect you. The Netherlands is a Nine Eyes member, meaning it participates in intelligence sharing. However, Dutch law does not require VPN providers to log user data, and Surfshark’s no-logs policy has been independently verified by Deloitte in 2025. NordVPN’s Panama jurisdiction is cleaner on paper, but both are trustworthy in practice.

Does Surfshark have a free trial?

Surfshark offers a 7-day free trial on iOS, Android, and macOS. Both Surfshark and NordVPN offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on all plans, so you can test either risk-free for a month. NordVPN offers a 3-day free trial on Android.

How many devices can I use with Surfshark and NordVPN?

Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous device connections on a single subscription. NordVPN is capped at 10. For individuals, 10 is likely plenty. For families or anyone sharing a subscription, Surfshark is the obvious choice.

Which VPN is better for torrenting?

Both allow P2P on all servers and offer dedicated P2P-optimised servers. In testing, download speeds were similar. NordVPN’s slightly better overall speed retention and its SOCKS5 proxy option give it a marginal edge for heavy torrenters, but Surfshark performs perfectly well for the average user.
