How to Watch Disney Plus Safely

How to watch Disney Plus VPN

Disney Plus is Disney’s new official streaming service, initially launched in the US, Canada and the Netherlands in November 2019. Gradually, other countries are getting the service as well, although other parts of the world will take another year or two. If you live in a country where the service has already launched, you will be able to watch your favorite Disney movie whenever you want.

Unfortunately, Disney Plus blocks the IP addresses of many VPN servers. Do you want to watch it safely, without putting your online privacy and security at risk? Then you will need a VPN that works with Disney Plus. Try Surfshark, for example:

Where Netflix once had a monopoly, new streaming services like Amazon Prime and HBO GO have popped up everywhere. One of the big newcomers is Disney Plus (Disney +), the official streaming service with everything from Disney. You can find all the passionate classics there, but also content from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and even Hamilton: The Musical.

Disney Plus officially launched in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands on November 12, 2019. Other countries such as India have also had access since then. Over the next few years, the service is expected to grow in both reach and library. In this article, we’ll tell you more about Disney Plus and how you can safely enjoy this new streaming service.

Disney Plus and Disney Star: Not Available to Everyone

Disney’s new service has brought some significant changes to the streaming market. The company announced that it gained over 28 million users in the first three months since its launch. This was much bigger than their predictions. In fact, many people cancelled their Netflix subscriptions to get a Disney Plus account. However, not everyone has equal access to this streaming service.

Disney Plus slowly launched its service in different parts of the world. While people in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, India and many European countries already have access, there are others who still cannot enjoy the streaming service. In other words, those who live in the right country are in luck.

The differences get even bigger when you look at the Disney Plus library, which consists of different categories. Its latest content, grouped under the Disney Star name, is only available in limited areas – and the United States is not one of them.

This means that not everything is ‘happily ever after’ for Disney Plus users. Not everyone has access to the same content. Also, due to the restrictions that Disney Plus has placed on their website, it is increasingly difficult for people using VPNs to access their content.

How VPNs Increase Your Online Protection and Freedom

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) helps to hide and change your IP address. This may not seem like much, but it is extremely important for your online privacy and security. Your IP address reveals all kinds of personal information about you, such as your location. The websites, along with all other parties that have access to your online data, can read this information and adjust their content accordingly.

Do you live in New York? Sites will know about and show advertisements for services in your local area. Are you currently in Paris? Then they can automatically send you to the French version of their website. With a VPN, however, this is not necessarily the case.

VPNs create a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. That way, everything you do online happens more anonymously and securely. All data traffic is sent through the tunnel, which means that third parties will not be able to access it as easily.

In short, a VPN gives you the opportunity to regain some of your privacy. Especially with big companies like Google and Facebook collecting all the information they can find about their users, that extra control can be extremely comforting and helpful.

Online restrictions and internet freedom

In addition to providing a sense of anonymity, a VPN can be a huge help to people whose internet access is being restricted. Some countries have imposed geographic restrictions that prevent citizens from accessing specific websites, such as news outlets or other online services. These limitations on people’s online freedom can be circumvented with a VPN.

If you choose a VPN server located in a country that adopts free internet, you can browse the web with an IP address from that country and regain access. In short, a VPN offers more online anonymity, better online security, and greater online freedom.

Unfortunately, some websites, including Disney Plus, choose to block IP addresses that are known to belong to VPN services. This poses an issue for users who want to enjoy Disney Plus while maintaining their online safety.

Since Disney doesn’t give people access to its content when they use a VPN, they are forced to turn off that VPN to watch Disney Plus content. In other words, if you use a VPN to keep your online traffic safe, you will be forced to give up your secure internet connection in order to be able to watch Disney movies through the service. This is a definite downside of Disney Plus.

For more information about VPNs and how they work, you can read our article “VPN Explained”, where we will tell you all about this topic.

How to get a VPN: step by step

VPNs allow you to browse the web safely, anonymously and freely. Therefore, we recommend that internet users subscribe to a reliable VPN. If you want to start using a VPN now, but don’t know how, follow the steps below:

  1. Check out our reviews and find  a reliable VPN provider  (e.g.  Surfshark)
  2. Subscribe to the service and  create an account
  3. Download VPN software for your device’s operating system (e.g. Windows, Linux or Mac)
  4. Access the VPN software with the account created in the second step.
  5. Connect to a server by choosing one in the software and clicking the ‘Connect’ button

If you followed these steps correctly, you will be connected to the VPN. Now you can browse the web in safeties and your internet activities are visible to anyone.

How to Access Disney Plus (and Disney Star)

If you want to enjoy all Disney Plus content, you will need to create a Disney Plus account. Fortunately, this is pretty easy. You just need an IP address located in a country where Disney Plus (and Disney Star) has already launched, which you can get simply by being in that country. Follow the steps below to subscribe to Disney Plus:

  1. Visit disneyplus.com
  2. Click on “Sign up for Disney+” at the bottom of the screen (or “Get all three” if you’re in the US and want to get the full package, including Hulu and ESPN+).
  3. Fill in your email address and press “Agree and continue“.
  4. Create a strong password and press “Continue“.
  5. Choose your subscription (monthly or annual) and payment method (credit card or PayPal), fill in your details and click on “Agree and subscribe”.

You now have access to all Disney Plus content available so far. Search the service for an old Disney classic, a beautiful Pixar short, the official recording of Hamilton, the latest Marvel blockbuster or the newest Disney Plus originals like The Mandalorian and WandaVision.

Which countries have access to Disney Plus?

If you are in a country where Disney Plus is not available, or where Disney Star has not been released (yet), you will not have access to all Disney Plus content. You may be able to create an account but encounter an error stating that the service is not available in your country. Of course, you will have full access to that account as soon as it is available at that location.

Disney Plus is currently available in North America, South America, Europe (Western), Australia and a limited part of Asia. While there isn’t a release date for every country in the world so far, here are the specific regions that have, or will have, access to Disney Plus:

Which countries have access to Star?

Disney Star is a special section of Disney Plus that includes tons of entertainment from ABC, HULU, Freeform and other services. You’ll find incredibly popular movies and series on the Star, including The Walking Dead, How I Met Your Mother, The Simpsons, The Hate You Give and Love, Simon.

The launch of Star greatly expanded the Disney Plus library and made it even more competitive when compared, for example, with Netflix.

However, Star is not available in all countries. Far from it, in fact. So far, Star is only available in the locations below:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • Western Europe (specifically Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom)

The service is due to roll out in Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea later this year, but even then, there will be many parts of the world that won’t have access to it. The United States, for example, will not have access to Star at all.

Why can’t I watch US Star?

Much of the content shown on Star is owned by HULU, based in the United States. This streaming service has its own subscription. In the US, you can get a HULU membership along with your Disney Plus membership at a discounted price, but HULU is not available in other parts of the world. Disney is now partially filling that gap with the release of Star.

However, this means that you will not have access to Star when using a US IP address. If you had, for example, a Dutch IP address, you would be able to access all the content available on Star even without a HULU subscription.

The Best VPNs for Disney Plus

In an ideal world, no one would need to give up their security and privacy to be able to watch a movie. However, this is the reality of many streaming services, including Disney Plus. Disney constantly blocks IP addresses from reputable VPN providers, making it impossible to watch their content protected by a VPN.

Fortunately, there are some VPN providers with servers that work with Disney Plus. So, you can watch the streaming service without sacrificing your security. Below you can find three VPN providers that offer access to Disney Plus.

1. Surfshark

Surfshark is among our favourite VPN services. This provider is relatively new but has quickly built up an excellent reputation. It doesn’t log your usage, it has many servers and server locations, and it doesn’t limit the number of devices you can use with your subscription. Perhaps most appealing is the fact that it only costs a few dollars a month.

The special thing about Surfshark is that all of its servers, regardless of their location, will give you access to the Disney Plus website and content. We consider Surfshark to be an excellent VPN provider that will successfully secure your internet connection while still allowing you to stream as normal.

Read more about this provider in our in-depth review or go directly to the Surfshark website by clicking on the banner below.

2. ExpressVPN

Like Surfshark, ExpressVPN specifically aims to provide its users with access to the Disney Plus website. If you choose the right VPN server on ExpressVPN, you can easily and securely enjoy the many Disney Plus movies and series (as long as you are subscribed to the streaming platform). This goes for any ExpressVPN server in the US, Canada, Netherlands, and Australia.

Since ExpressVPN is one of the fastest VPNs out there, you probably won’t even notice the difference in internet speed. No extra buffers will happen! If you want to know more about ExpressVPN, you can read a full review of the VPN service here or visit the website directly.

3. NordVPN

NordVPN is one of the biggest and best VPNs out there. It has over 5,000 servers in over 60 countries. The speed of most NordVPN servers is great. Plus, it’s one of the most secure VPNs out there. NordVPN is reliable and has a very user-friendly app.

If you want to watch Disney Plus, you can use American, Dutch or Australian VPN servers to do so. In the future, more servers may allow you to watch Disney Plus while keeping your connection secure.

You can check out our more detailed review of this provider here or go straight to the website by clicking the button in the box below.

Still unable to access Disney Plus or Disney Star?

It is possible that Disney Plus is still not working for you, even after you have subscribed to one of the services. You will still be protected by the VPN, but you will not have access to your favorite content on Disney Plus. Does this mean you will need to disable your VPN? Not necessarily. There are some easy tricks that can help you fix this problem:

    • Delete cookies and trackers or  open a window  in incognito mode  before accessing the Disney Plus site. Trackers in your browser may prevent you from opening the right page and accessing the service. By deleting cookies and browsing incognito mode, it will appear that you are a new visitor, allowing you access.
    • Try a different VPN server. It could be that Disney has blocked the IP address of the VPN server you are using, preventing you from accessing the service. Fortunately, many VPNs have several servers in the same location, just switch and connect to another server. If you want to access the streaming platform and stay protected, just choose another server. With some VPNs, you can manually choose another server. With others, you will need to keep reconnecting until you find a server with a different IP. If you want to find out what IP address you are using right now, read our article  “What is my IP?”

Disney+ payment issues

Another problem that can occur when people try to subscribe to Disney Plus has to do with payment. Disney will verify your payment information when you want to sign up. If your PayPal account or credit card is not from a country where Disney Plus is available, they will decline your payment.

This is inconvenient if you, for example, have moved to a country with access to Disney Plus, but your payment details are still on file in a country without access. But there is a workaround: pay with Google Play or iTunes gift cards. Keep in mind that this will not work in your browser. Using a smartphone is the easiest way to do this. Here’s what you will have to do:

  1. Create a new account for Google Play or iTunes. If you want to do this safely, make sure your VPN is connected to a country where Disney+ is available. If you use Google Play, be sure to create a new Amazon account.
  2. If you use Google Play, go to Amazon and purchase a gift card and link it to your new Google account. If you use iTunes, go to any Apple gift card distributor (Walmart, Target, Best Buy) and buy a gift card and link it to your new Apple ID.
  3. Download the Disney+ app on your smartphone from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  4. Sign up with your new email address and pay with the gift card you’ve associated with your account.

Important Notice About Disney Plus User Agreement

In theory, you could use the VPNs mentioned above to watch Disney Plus in a country where you shouldn’t have access (yet). Just choose the correct VPN server location. However, this could be a direct violation of Disney Plus terms and conditions.

At the time of writing, the user agreement mentions that Disney Plus has geographic restrictions on its content and uses different technologies and methods to determine your physical location. This agreement does not permanently prohibit the use of VPN, but the terms and conditions may change. There is a chance that Disney Plus will start ‘punishing’ users who try to access their services with a VPN, for example by blocking their account completely.

Before trying to use a VPN to access Disney Plus content from a different country, check the user agreement. You can find this at the bottom of the site. If the agreement has changed or is different in your country, you could be violating it by using a VPN to unblock the content. Any possible consequences resulting from this are the responsibility of the user.

Final considerations

Disney Plus is a big hit in the world of online streaming. It has diverse content ranging from Cinderella to Hamilton and from National Geographic documentaries to The Walking Dead and The Simpsons. Plus, it’s one of the cheapest services out there. Still, if you won’t be able to enjoy this content without giving up the security of your VPN, you might wonder if it’s worth subscribing.

Fortunately, some VPN providers have servers that work with Disney Plus. With  SurfsharkExpressVPN and  NordVPN, for example, you will be able to enjoy all Disney content and keep your connection safe with a secure internet connection. But remember that you will always need a (paid) subscription to Disney Plus before accessing the streaming service.

By subscribing to Disney Plus, you will have to accept the terms and conditions set forth by the company. While they don’t mention anything about VPNs, these agreements are subject to change. Please keep in mind that using a VPN to unblock Disney Plus from a country where the content is not yet available could be a violation of Disney rules.
